  1. The Vacuole Diem Thanh Tran Jillian Gilmartin

  2. How It Was Discovered • The vacuole was discovered with a microscope by Antony Van Leeuwenhoek. • When it was first discovered it was originally defined as a cell space empty of cytoplasmic matter but as technology advanced it was eventually defined as a vacuole.

  3. Location • The vacuole is located in the plant and animal cell. • In the animal cell, there are many small vacuoles throughout the cell. • In the plant cell, there is one large central vacuole.

  4. Function • Removes waste. • Stores foods, nutrients, and water. • It stores lipids and proteins. Lipids- fats that store energy. Lipids are oxidized to release large amount of energy to the cell. It helps build parts of the cell membrane. Protein- Made up of amino acids. It repairs cells and maintains and replaces tissues.

  5. Function • Protects other cell organelles from their harmful effect. • In the plant cell, it offers support to the leaves and other cell structures. • Regulates the delivery of CO2 to the chloroplast. • It stores extra water that the plant can also use for the process of photosynthesis

  6. Function • The vacuole maintains the right pH levelthroughout the cell. • The pH helps to regulate the cells chemical reactions which are necessary for growth and survival • Some vacuoles have special functions and plants cells can have more than one type of vacuole • The vacuole contains enzymes that are used to break down macromolecules.

  7. What it is made up of • The vacuole is membrane bound, enclosed cavity or compartment that is present in the cytoplasm of cells. • Vacuoles are surrounded by a membrane called the tonoplast. It is the cytoplasmic membrane that separates the vacuole’s contents from the cell’s cytoplasm.
