  5. College Search Process • “The application process is all about discovering who you are.” • Determining the best “fit” • According to President Dennison (8/27/09) • 100 H.S. Freshman -->10 years later-only 18 have a degree (approximately 18% = 52 SHS students)

  6. Factors to consider: • Type • 2-year or 4-year • Public or Private • Type of Program • Size • Location • Cost

  7. Standardized Tests • One or the other, not both • Your highest score will be used • ACT (Good Students) • No penalty for wrong answers • Curriculum based (all encompassing final exam) • Science section • SAT (Good Test-takers) • ¼ point penalty for every wrong answer • “The SAT tests your ability to take the SAT test.” • Tries to determine “innate ability”

  8. Scholarships • The most money available is at the college or university of interest • Being well-rounded matters • You don’t have to be the top student • Deadlines are our friends • Could be a good return on your time investment

  9. Financial Aid • FAFSA form: Free Application for Federal Student Aid • Apply after January 1st • It doesn’t hurt to apply • Investigate the process, programs, and particulars • SAR  EFC  COA – EFC = Need

Some advice… • Freshmen and Sophomores • Your GPA is cumulative • Get to know the adults at school and in your life • Take classes that are interesting and challenging • Be involved and stay involved • Spend some time thinking about what you plan to do after high school, then make a plan to get there • Juniors • Take some, not all, AP or Honors courses • Take your ACT or SAT exams this spring, especially if you’re in a fall sport • Take a tour of colleges and universities this spring break • Do it NOW!

  11. Some advice… • Seniors • Don’t self-select yourself • Apply early (pay attention to deadlines) • Apply often (scholarships) • Gather accurate information from good sources (financial aid) • Communicate clearly and effectively

  12. Parents… • The forecast: fair to partly cloudy…hoping for sunshine • And the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor/Actress goes to… • Recognize how things have changed

Youknow you grew up inthe 70's if... • In your sophomore class picture, you're wearing a shirt with the collar "up". • Leg warmers were cool. • You ever asked to be gagged with a spoon. • You ever had a Dorothy Hamill haircut or used Short and Sassy shampoo. • You remember when Jordache jeans were cool. • You remember "Friday Night Videos" before the days of MTV. • You remember having to get off the couch to change the TV channel. • You took family trips BEFORE the invention of the mini-van and • remember riding in the back of the station wagon trying to get passing trucks to • honk at you. • Your first musical purchase was an 8-track tape. • Your parents paid $2,000 for a top-loading VCR that was almost the size of a coffee table. • You've ever owned a pair of rainbow suspenders like the ones Mork used to wear.
