Introduction ◦ Bass guitars, electric bass or simply bass are the lowest pitched members of the guitar family. ◦ Similar in appearance and structure to electric and acoustic guitars, it is a plucked string instrument with a long neck and scale, usually with 4-6 strings or courses. ◦ Since the mid-1950s, bass guitar has largely replaced the popular music contrabass. 4-string basses are usually tuned in the same way as contrabass.

  3. ◦ It is mainly played with fingers, thumbs, or picks. Bass guitars require external amplification to be heard at normal performance levels. ◦ This corresponds to a pitch one octave lower than the four lowest strings of the guitar (E, A, D, and G).
