  1. Every which way but forward [SMG] Confuse. Clutter. Clumsify

  2. Confuse. Clutter. Clumsify • Most projects were assigned by who was they ran into first. • Consisted of Ross saying hey I want something that does X, and walking off. • At this point “code monkey” no ask questions he/she just code like good monkey.

  3. Confuse. Clutter. Clumsify • Get assignment try to figure out how to integrate it with your other due dates. • Wait for another manager to tell you to do something different.

  4. Confuse. Clutter. Clumsify • The events following are reenactments of a real situation while the words may not be exact the event actually occurred. • 1.) I was working on an assignment to automatically log users in when they accessed one system from another system. This was a project for Jim.

  5. Confuse. Clutter. Clumsify • There was no due date on my assignment and no real directions Jim just said “hey I want the customers to be able to X from Y and this happen”. • Ross walks in with a GPS device and says “Hey Robert just the guy I was looking for” and hands me the device. The he says “Can you make this so that when we schedule things it shows on here where the driver is and what he needs to go.”

  6. Confuse. Clutter. Clumsify • Jim comes up and says hey I have this program that we transferred from one server to another and now it does not work. Can you fix it for me (he meant drop what your doing and fix now “code Monkey”). • As I am working on this Mayur comes up and asks how my progress on my original project is coming.

  7. Confuse. Clutter. Clumsify • He then proceeds to tell me to finish the original one and he will inform the others. • I keep working on Jims new one since it is the easiest to finish. • Ross walks up as I am working wanting to know if I have made any progress on the GPS project.

  8. Confuse. Clutter. Clumsify • Once Jim’s new project is finished I start back on my original project. • At this point I am just ignoring Ross’s comments about the GPS and replying that I am working on it because I know his attention span is short.

  9. Confuse. Clutter. Clumsify • I finish the login project and talk to Jim to work out why when I am testing it I get no response • It turns out no one had started the other half that would accept the information and return stuff from the other system. • Yes you guessed it this was now my assignment.

  10. Confuse. Clutter. Clumsify • Ross walks in with a Web Camera and a new project. • I asked about the GPS project and he told me to table it for now because this was more important. • With all of that said it was a great place to work, and I learned more in one year there than I have in 4 years of college.

  11. Not the end just the end of the beginning. • Learn from every experience because mine landed me a job here http://www.optech.ca/intl.htm • Where I will be an “embedded systems engineer” working with the data acquisitions team developing the newest generation of lidar systems.
