Benefits to Internet Censorship Political and Social Reasons Against Censorship: 1) Advocates assert censorship’s ability to prevent political unrest often tied to dissatisfaction with federally implemented procedures. 2) Censorship of anti-war material has been used to promote a spirit of patriotism. 3) Advocates say censorship has the ability to defend laws that are widely broken over the internet. 4) The freedom of families and cultures to practice their values and beliefs in a safe and secure environment can also be considered the freedom of expression. 5) The Internet is unlike other forms of mass media in that: it has become a form of public property, it decentralizes responsibility from the user, and information spreads dangerously fast.
Examples • 1) The US law against child pornography: Censorship of information and images has been used to help protect Internet users from being unfairly subjected to criminal charges. • Why is child pornography such a big issue? • It has proven links to sexual abuse, the normalization of adult sexual interest in children, and negative impacts on the health and wellbeing of the victims. • US used censorship during the Civil War to prevent antagonistic sentiment. • PICS (Platform for Internet Content Selection) is a filter that families or religious groups use to prevent access to: violent material, abortion information, and birth control.
