Elena Lucrezia Piscopia 1678 History • Founded in 1222 • Organised not ex privilegio, but by a group of students who had left the University of Bologna as a result of “offences to academic freedom and the failure to observe the privileges that had been guaranteed to teachers and pupils” • Motto “Universa Universis Patavina Libertas” (Universal and for all, Paduan freedom)

History – some milestones • Founded in 1222: one of the most ancient university in Europe. • ~1510: Venice is the largest town in Europe • 1592: Galileo is a professor in Padova • Great importance had the school of Medicine with the founding of the first permanent anatomy theatre (in 1594 and still existing) • 1678: Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia, first woman getting a university degree • 1848: February 8th: students’ insurrection against the Austrian • 1945: golden Honor medal for the role of the Univ. against the Nazi-fascists
