Natural and Artificial Light • Natural Light • Comes from sunlight • Artificial Light • Incandescent • Light produced by electricity passing through a tungsten filament in a glass bulb. • Warm and flattering • Halogen • Special kind of incandescent bulb • More efficient than incandescent • Produce a whiter more intense light • Last longer • Become very hot • Require special handling and are expensive • Fluorescent • Visible light produced when chemicals inside a sealed glass tube transform ultraviolet rays. • Long, straight tubes • Last longer • Use less energy • Produce less heat and glare

  7. Types of Lighting • Structural Lighting • Built in light fixture, cannot be moved

  8. Types of Lighting • Nonstructural Lighting • Fixtures that can be moved or replaced • Ceiling or wall fixtures • Track lighting • Canister spotlights • Lamps

  9. Planning Lighting • Consider • Safety • Amount of light needed for different tasks • Choosing bulbs based on their wattage • Guidelines • Balance the lighting • Consider the colors and textures • Colored lighting affects moods • Avoid glare • Check labels—UL seal • Consider using timers
