  1. Beautiful Question Project Can positive thinking attract outcomes you want? By: Brittany wallace

  2. The Beautiful Question So many individuals have many different ways of thinking and display different outlooks on life! • How do you look at life? • Positive • Negative • Pessimistic • Optimistic • Realist

  3. My Question to you…. Can positive thinking attract outcomes you want in life? • I chose this topic because since I was a young child my father has always stated that your thoughts and mind control you, if you say you cannot achieve a goal your mind will prevent you. • It fascinates me how every individual has a different outlook on life and what ways of thinking has the best outcome for receiving what you want out of life.

  4. How do you think? • Positive • No possibility of doubt; clear and definite • Negative • Not desirable • Optimist • Mental attitude/ world view that interprets situations as being the best • Pessimist • State of mind where one anticipates undesirable outcomes • Realist • Someone views things the way they are

  5. On a day to day basis what kind of thinking do YOU partake in? Do you see positive actions occurring after your thinking or does it lead to failure? Do you think a change in your thinking can lead you to new beginnings?

  6. Power of Positive Thinking Everyone is searching for meaning in life and it is critical for one’s well-being to know that there is a reason for their existence. There are positive correlations with satisfaction of the life they live, thus decreasing depression. Major stressors in life such as family situations, career and money all have a high potential to lead to dissatisfaction of one’s life. One way to prevent stress-induced declination of meaning is by Positive Automatic Thoughts. Positive Automatic Thoughts are statements that oneself thinks of for example, “I am a good person, others enjoy my company.” It is said that automatic thoughts “result in emotional, cognitive, biological, behavioral and interpersonal response patterns” that allow us to adapt to stressful situations. PATs have also been shown to predict future happiness, as the emphasis is primarily on changing your positive thinking instead of focusing on decreasing negative thoughts. These positive automatic thoughts a person has, acts as a buffer to stressful situations allowing positive and flexible mental states.

  7. The Secret The movie “The Secret” is a 2006 Prime Time Production that includes multiple interviews to show that people can obtain wants and needs by “believing in an outcome, repeatedly thinking about it, and remaining positive emotions to ‘attract’ the desired outcome.”

  8. Bob Proctor: The Philosopher Bob is the man that starts off the movie describing the secret also known as “Law of Attraction”. How did Bob change his life? He had stated he needed to change his “paradigm”. Everyone is brought up being “conditioned” by your parents, your family and those who brought you up in this world, as this is considered Genetic conditioning. He then needed to think positively but more than that, do positive. In order to reprogram yourself to a different mind set, repetition is used. Reducing stress is also key in allowing your body to be loose and free of negative thoughts, as this will allow positive energy to flow freely. Stress comes much from worrying of what others think about us, we need to understand ourselves and live the way we want to.

  9. Rhonda Byrne- The Producer Rhonda began to strive for a different life after traumatic events in her personal and professional life occurred. The main intention of “The Secret” was to bring joy to billions is how she stated it. A book was given to Byrne from her daughter about the law of attraction. She states, “If you want to stay poor, keep obsessing about your poverty; if you want to be rich, imagine yourself rich”. She believed you must get rid of negative thoughts, in order to receive love you must love yourself, and express gratitude. As for the scientific background, “Thoughts are magnetic and they have a frequency. As you think, your thoughts are sent out to the Universe and they magnetically attract all like things that are of the same frequency.” She says you can have anything you want in life, but you must feel good and remain positive. Byrne enjoys list making and encourages everyone to write everything you love down on paper.

  11. Power of Negative Thinking On the opposite end of the spectrum there are instances where individuals feel by having negative thoughts it can cause positive outcomes. The article, “Preparing Students for the Worst: The Power of Negative Thinking” by Dale O. Fogle, it discusses a student not being sure if he will be able to finish this paper by the deadline in order to present it. They had emphasized the importance of preparing yourself for failure now so you will have less distraction and loss later on. It asks the question, “ Do you believe a successful presentation or article will win friends and influence others, or make you happy for more than a few hours after? Better look to living now and the task at hand.” By thinking strictly positive you believe that the undesirable action could never occur. However, thinking negatively allows you to think that I will be okay if an undesirable outcome occurs.

  12. Interview Person Interviewed- Shayna S. Date: March 10th 2014 Where: URI Library Shayna is one of my close friends who invited me to watch the movie “The Secret”, as she saw myself struggling with issues in my life such as school and relationships. After watching this movie I decided to ask her questions on how she was introduced to this movie, her turning point, what was the catch, and the results.

  13. Question #1 Who introduced you to the movie, “The secret” and why? • “ My mom was the one to one day shove this movie in my face as she told me to stop everything I was doing to watch this. “ • “ My mom saw me going down a bad path as I constantly was complaining about others and thriving on negative energy, it was ripping me apart.”

  14. Question #2 What was your turning point that made you want to change your outlook on life? • “ I hit my breaking point sophomore year of college, when I completely hated myself and everyone in it. I could see that not only was it affecting me but also my mother. I was going through an “I- don’t- care” phase and was gaining weight and drinking too much. It was as if I was trying to drown the negativity but it was just making things worse.”

  15. Question #3 Was there any point where you felt the movie “The Secret” was too good to be true? • “Yes, from the very beginning I doubted my mom and the “power” she believed this movie had. Yet again my negativity was preventing me from believing anything in my life could have potential positive benefits.”

  16. Question #4 What were your results after watching this movie, did you end up seeing “the power”? • “After watching this movie, I realized it was time to start working on my brain and the way I thought about things. I started small and thought positive about things like I can finish all my homework by tonight to things like I will lose ten pounds by summer. I was able to apply this movie to all areas in my life and I really started seeing my life change. I found my boyfriend a few months later and I started feeling good about myself and my accomplishments. I suggest that everyone watch this movie not once, but multiple times!”

  17. My Perspective My perspective of “the power” of positivity has been made even more concrete after researching my question, “Can positive thinking attract outcomes you want in life”. As I stated from the very beginning, my father was the one to really push positive thinking and how you must control your own mind and tell yourself “I will make it through this Nursing Program”, you control you. After watching the movie “The Secret”, I was able to reflect on my own life and thinking. I was always somewhat negative mainly because I hate the feeling of being let down so I thought this negativity would prevent me from getting upset over failure. This only put myself in a worse way and I was constantly focused on the negative. Once I changed my mindset and believed I could accomplish any task as long as I put fourth effort I was unstoppable. Today I can finally say that I am impressed with myself and my achievements. At the young age of twenty-one I will be able to say I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree in Nursing! Although I had found articles stating negative thinking can prepare you for failure and you will be able to get over the fact of failure easier, I do not see this tactic as working out to a life full of happiness and satisfaction. Once you begin to think with a negative outlook it effects you and everyone else around you. My final answer to my beautiful question is Yes, by thinking positive you can attract positive outcomes in your life!
