  2. The Map of London

  3. The Sherlock Holmes Museum In 1990, a museum was at last opened at 221b Baker Street, though it should have happened long ago. After all, 221b Baker Street is the world’s most famous address and people have been writing to it for more than 100 years.

  4. The Sherlock Holmes Museum is unlike other museums. Very little here is locked up in glass cases. You can sit in Holmes’s armchair by the fireplace, you can examine his things and put on his deerstalker.

  5. As you wander through the museum, you have a felling that the great detective has just left the room for a moment, and Mrs Hudson is somewhere in the kitchen, and you’ll see her entering the room with a tray of teacups.

  6. The famous study which Holmes and Watson shared for almost 25 years.

  9. Big Ben Big Ben is one of London’s most famous landmarks. In fact, Big Ben is not the name of the clock on the Tower of Westminster, but it is the nickname of the bell inside. It is actually called the Great Bell of Westminster and was made in 1858. You can hear the sound of Big Ben every hour in London. The clock and the bell got their names after Sir Benjamin Hall. He was a tall man, whose nickname was Big Ben.

  10. The clock’s four white faces look north, south, east and west. The minute hands in each of the clock faces are nearly 5 metres long! Even in this technological age, the clock is still wound by hand.

  12. С=ПR • C=5·3,14=15,7м • S=ПR² • S=25·3,14=78,5м

  13. The Tower of London Throughout its 900-year history the Tower has been many things: a palace, a fortress, a prison, a place of execution, and even a zoo. Today, the Tower is best known as a historical museum and more than 2 million people visit it each year. About 150 people and eight ravens live in the Tower. And of course the whole place is crawling with ghosts.

  14. The oldest part is the White Tower built as a fortress and family residence by William the Conqueror in 1078. This is where the kings of England once ate, slept and ran the country.

  15. Ravens There have always been ravens at the Tower. The first ones probably built their nests here because they liked the old stone houses and walls. There is a story that they bring good luck to Britain, if they stay at the Tower. That’s why they get meat and biscuits every day. But their wings are clipped so they can’t fly away. They are not very friendly. Once one of them bit a German minister.

  16. The Beefeaters The Beefeaters used to guard the Tower and its prisoners. Today, they work mostly as guides. They show people around and tell stories about all the terrible things that have happened here. No one knows more about the history and secrets of the Tower than these famous men. When they are guiding, they wear dark blue uniforms. On state occasions they wear red and gold tunics designed for them during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

  17. The Crown Jewels The Jewel House at the Tower of London is the home of the most valuable collection of jewels in the world, the Crown Jewels. They are well looked after. Once they were stolen by a man called Colonel Blood. But he was caught just as he was leaving the Tower. Thomas Blood didn’t have to go to prison. The king gave a pension instead.

  19. S=а·в·с S=30·35·29=30450м

  20. St Paul’s Cathedral St Paul’s Cathedral was built after the Great Fire of 1666 by Sir Christopher Wren, a brilliant mathematician and engineer, who designed many famous buildings in London.

  21. Sir Christopher Wren It took Sir Christopher Wren 35 years to finish St Paul’s. He designed St Paul’s Cathedral to give a feeling of space and light. Wren built more than 50 buildings after the Great Fire, but this is his masterpiece.

  22. The Whispering Gallery The cathedral is a hundred and ten metres high and you can climb the 627 steps up to the dome. Inside the dome is the Whispering Gallery. If you whisper close to the wall on one side of the dome, you can be heard on the other side.
