  1. The Misunderstood Cloud CAGS Alaska 2007 Nuvuya Group

  2. Abstract Students will observe and record cloud formations and make precipitation measurements. Students will analyze the data to determine relationship between cloud type and precipitation. The key element of this project is to follow GLOBE protocol in order to help students conduct an inquiry-based investigation.

  3. Research Question Our potential research question is, “Can we predict the type and amount of precipitation by observing clouds?” This question is relevant to our students because it addresses national science standards for content and process skills, while demonstrating to the students practical applications of scientific observation and research. This project references the American Association for the Advancement of Science's website regarding science reform.  AAAS proposes that science education should be more ambitious and approximate good science.   The organization encourages long term investigations. (Project 2061)

  4. Materials and Methods Materials *Atmosphere investigation sheet *Globe cloud chart *Globe weather station *Digital camera *Internet access *Convex Mirror Method *Students will collect data utilizing Globe protocol.

  5. Data Summary and Analysis Students will compile and analyze data to determine how cloud type relates to precipitation. They will look for patterns to predict future precipitation in their region. After testing their hypotheses and analyzing their results, students will present their findings using Power Point. Their presentation must consist of a picture of the clouds observed, the identification of the cloud, and the amount and type of precipitation.

  6. Discussion This project abounds with opportunities for extensions and indeed the ability to branch in to any grade and or skill level. Eg. Cloud Collection, Meteorologist Video, Cloud Models, Aersol Effects vs. Precipitation
