  3. The Qing Dynasty • Ming Dynasty is replaced by the Manchus, the Qing Dynasty • Two emperors, Kangxi and Qianlong, become effective rulers • The Dutch pay respect to the Qing by kowtowing • The British try to get a better trading relationship with China through the Macartney Mission

  4. Daily Life in Ming and Qing China • China remains largely a country of farmers • Women have important family responsibilities but suffer by being treated as socially inferior • The Chinese enjoy traditional cultural pursuits, such as drama and painting

  5. Group Activity • Pretend that you are a member of a European crew that has come to China. Send a postcard to a family member or friend showing a scene from one of your stops on one side and a description of what you’ve seen on the other. Answer who, what, when, where, why, how in your description.
