In this engaging session on September 15 (A-Day) & 16 (B-Day), students will explore how the brain and nervous system communicate. Key topics include the structure of neurons, the role of neurotransmitters, and the function of synapses. Students will work in groups to construct a model neuron using pipe cleaners, yarn, and other materials, mastering the concepts of soma, axon, dendrite, and more. Following the activity, students will create a colorful labeled drawing of their neuron model. Homework includes reading assignments and vocabulary work to reinforce learning.

September 15 (A-Day) & 16 (B-Day) Objective: Explain how the brain and nervous system communicates specifically addressing neurons, neurotransmitters, and synapses. • CBM • Neuron construction • Parts/Types of Neurons • Synapse • Neurotransmitters • HW: Read pg 67-72, vocab; start AP bio assignment
Task • Get into a group of 3-4 people. • Each group will be given the following items: • 3 Pipe cleaners • Yarn • A Pom • Saran Wrap • Using this items, construct a neuron, which includes the following parts: • Soma (Cell Body) • Axon • Dendrite • Myelin Sheath • Synaptic Terminal • After constructing the neuron, call me over and explain the parts. • Then, draw a picture of the neuron on a piece of paper. Use different colors to represent the different parts. Then, label what each part is and explain what it does.
Nervous System Cells Neurons • Interneuron • Afferent Neurons • Efferent Neurons Glial Cells • Support neurons • Produce myelin sheath • Influence transmission of messages
Communication between Neurons • Synaptic gap Post Synaptic Potential • Terminals - Inhibitory • Vesicles - Excitatory • Receptor sites • Action potential • Resting potential/Sodium Potassium Pump • Refractory period
Cell Communication cont’d • Neurotransmitters • Types: • Acetylcholine • Dopamine • Serotonin • GABA • Glutamate • Opioid peptides • Endorphins • Neuropeptides • Substance P Agonists & Antagonists
Homework • Read pg 67-72; work on vocab • Work on AP Biology Assignment • Work with another student to show 20 vocabulary words from Chapter 2 (pg 97). • This may be done in two ways: • Create drawings/illustrations that include the word and definition. Make them colorful and suitable for mounting. • And/Or: • Create a poem that rhymes and has a particular pattern. Type up the poem and make it suitable for framing. • You may do any combination of these two as long as there are 20 different vocabulary words once the assignment is completed. This assignment is worth 40 points. • Due date: A-Day – Wednesday September 29; B-Day Thursday September 30
