Discover how our innovative solution tackles overcrowding at London tube stations. Many stations experience uneven demand, leading to frustrating journeys for commuters and tourists alike. By utilizing TfL's raw data on ticket and Oyster card barriers, we developed a real-time tube map that visualizes crowd sizes at each station. This web app, built with PHP and MySQL, plots dynamic SVG circles representing user traffic, enabling travelers to plan their journeys more efficiently. Our approach promises to enhance the overall commuting experience in London.

The problem • Many tube stations are too busy • Uneven demand across tube stations • No way to plan their journey to avoid bottlenecks • Existing journey-planners don’t give any idea • Tourists have no way of predicting
Data that could fix the problem • Data that shows crowd-size at every station • Real-time has a real use • Can be collected to build an accurate image of past/future • TfL currently collects data from every ticket and Oyster card barrier at tube stations • we know this because they release an annual overview of the traffic at all stations
The solution • Real-time tube map • circles over each station growing larger as more people visit the station • Because TfL will not release the data, we’ve had to make up our own data • web app in PHP • MySQL database • plots SVG circles over a tube map • Prototype/Scriptaculous with Google Charts API
Summary • We’ve created a way to improve the experience of using the tube and found a way to evenly spread out the load across the area of London. • could be implemented very easily with TfL’s existing data • coupled with schemes such as the Barclays Cycle Hire (@barclayscycle), we could take over the world…
Footnotes • Okay, I’ve had a look at some of the other apps. They’re pretty nice-looking. • We’re better than clipart. • But can you turn down this face? • Oh, and not tomention, our ideas’rebetter than theirs.
