Survey Methodology • More than 10,000 households, plus an additional 3,000 interviews regarding children living in those households – for a total of 13,000+ interviews. • Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia • Interviews are conducted by telephone using random-digit dial. • Adult & child respondents are selected using the last birthday method. • Interviews about selected children are conducted with a child proxy. • Interviews conducted in English & Spanish. • Oversample of adults ages 60+ and 75+. • Oversample of Asians.

GENDER According to the 2000 Census, there are 535,959 persons ages 65 and older living in the five county area of Southeastern Pennsylvania (SEPA) with the greatest number of elderly living in Philadelphia (213,722 persons). A disproportionate number of older adults are female (60.9%). About one half of older adults (49.0%) in SEPA are 65-74 years of age. Less than ten percent are 85 years of age or older (9.2%).   7. Figure 2: Older Adults (65+) in Southeastern Pennsylvania by Race, 2002. More than eight out of ten older adults in SEPA (80.8%) are white, 16.6% are Black, and 2.6% are of another racial group. The racial composition of the older adult population in Philadelphia is different from that of other counties. One out of three Philadelphia older adults are black (35.5%). Only slightly more than one percent (1.6%) of the older adult population in SEPA report that they are of Latino origin or descent.
