  4. It was formulated as a criticism of progressive trends in schools by William C. Bagley (1874-1946) a professor of education at Teachers College, Columbia University • Essentialists believe that human culture has a core of common knowledge that schools are obligated to transmit to students in a systematic disciplined way

  5. Essentialists stress what they believe to be the essential knowledge and skills often termed “the basics” that productive members of our society need to know • Schooling should be practical and provide children with sound instruction that prepares them to live life; schools should not try to influence or set social policies

  6. Key points • Essentialists believe that children should learn traditional basic subjects. • Essentialists believe that these should be learned thoroughly and rigorously.  • An essentialist program normally teaches children progressively, from less complex skills to more complex. • There should be a common core of curriculum that should be taught to all • Produce productive members of society • There "goals" are to transmit cultural heritage and develop citizens by • Instilling core knowledge • instilling a hard work ethic and mental discipline • through teacher centered instruction "New Page 12." 8. The Essentialist Teacher • The teacher should act as a role model to the students • try to put forth traditional moral values and qualities such as respect for authority, determination, loyalty to duty, consideration for others, and realism and the knowledge that students need to become model citizens.
