  2. Introduction

  3. Pathology forms the infrastructure of medicine and should be treated as a subject of equal importance to the others studied during the Integrated Clinical Science (ICS) course. • Pathology is the study and diagnosis of disease through examination of organs, tissues, cells and body fluids. • The term encompasses both the medical specialty which uses tissues and body fluids to obtain clinically useful information, as well as the related scientific study of disease processes.

Mission • The Department aims to be a leading esteemed centre for research and teaching across the breadth of the discipline of pathology. • It will undertake excellent research of biomedical research • It will provide high quality teaching and learning for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

  6. It will actively engage with the wider community to share its expertise. • It will strive to attract and retain high quality staff and students • It will provide the appropriate physical resources that will facilitate research and learning.   • It will provide a high quality service for patients regarding examination and reporting of pathology samples received in the university hospitals.

  7. Vision • The vision of the Department of Pathology is to enquire, investigate and communicate in order to deliver excellence in teaching and research.

  8. OVERALL AIM OF THE COURSE

  9. To provide a core knowledge of disease processes affecting the different systems, with particular reference to mechanisms and natural history of disease

  10. To highlight the pivotal role of pathology in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of disease • To interest the students in pathology so that they will read and expand their core knowledge throughout their professional career

  11. INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES(ILOS)

  12. I- KNOWLEDGE and UNDERSTANDING

  13. By the end of the course, students should be able to: • Define and discuss the main disease categories that may affect the body (general pathology) as well as the basic mechanisms underlying these disorders (etiology , pathogenesis & natural history)

  14. Describe the morphologic (gross & microscopic) changes occurring as a result of such disease processes in various organ systems • Determine the fate & complications of each particular disease and outline the general management procedures

  15. II- INTELLECTUAL SKILLS

  16. DATA ACQUISITION, DATA ANALYSIS & PROBLEM SOLVING  By the end of the course, students should be able to: • Predict the signs and symptoms of a disease based on   the underlying gross & microscopic tissue changes. Thereby enabling the student recognize patients with life/organ threatening conditions

  17. Interpret  a pathology report  • Choose the most appropriate pathologic diagnostic procedures  • Select the necessary techniques for sample reception & processing according to the nature of specimen received   

  18. c- PROFESSIONAL AND PRACTICAL SKILLS (CLINICAL & LABORATORY  SKILLS)

  19. By the end of the course, students should be : • Prepared for their upcoming clinical training • Able of diagnosing and fully reporting or describing the pathologic picture of a disorder based on gross or microscopic morphology.

  20. d- GENERAL AND TRANSFERABLE SKILLS

  21. Appreciate the importance of life long learning and show a strong commitment to it. • Use the sources of biomedical information to remain current with the advances in knowledge & practice

Frame a question, search the literature, collect, analyze, critically appraise and utilize the obtained information to solve a particular clinical problem according to the principles of evidenced based medicine • Respond appropriately according to the seriousness of the pathologic diagnosis in an acceptable humane manner, treating the patient as a whole rather than a lesion or specimen

  23. Maintain a professional image in manner, dress, speech and interpersonal relationships that is consistent with the medical profession's accepted current standards in the community • Identify difficult ethical situations and how to properly deal with them

  24. Express themselves freely and adequately by improving their descriptive  capabilities and enhancing their communication skills
