What is White Nose Syndrome? • It was first documented in the winter of 2006 – 2007 in New York. • It is named after the white fungus that grows on the nose’s and wing’s of bats. • It is linked to a fungus called Geomycesdestrucans. • It is transferred bat to bat and from people who don’t clean their gear before going to a new cave.

  3. What are the Symptoms? • Bats lose their fat reserves. • White fungus on nose, ears, wings, and tail. • Bats flying in freezing temperatures. • Clusters of bats near the entrance to the cave. • Dead or dying bats near trees or other structures.

  4. Who is affected? • It is not known to affect people. • As of October 2010 it has killed more than one million bats in the Northeast and Canada. • Big brown bat, Eastern small-footed bat, Indiana bat, Little brown bat, Northern long-eared bat, Tricolored bat.

  5. What to do if you see an affected bat. • If you find a bat you should contact the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service. Some bats have identifying tags. • You should take pictures to help determine if it is white nose syndrome. • If you must get rid of the bat pick it up with a plastic bag, then put it in another bag. Spray with disinfectant and place in trash. Wash your hands thoroughly.
