  4. Quoting, Paraphrasing, Summarizing... • Quotation: identical to the original. They must match the source document word for word and must be attributed to the original author. • Paraphrasing: put a passage from source material into your own words. A paraphrase must also be attributed to the original source. • Summarizing: put the main idea(s) into your own words, including only the main point(s). Once again, it is necessary to attribute summarized ideas to the original source.

  5. Paraphrasing The current constitutional debate over heavy metal rock and gangsta rap music is not just about the explicit language but also advocacy, an act of incitement to violence. Paraphrase:  Lyrics in some rap and heavy metal songs that appear to promote violence, along with concerns about obscenity, have generated a constitutional debate over popular music.

Compare and contrast the reasons why the North and South fought the Civil War weak • The North and South fought the Civil War for many reasons, some of which were the same and some different. • It restates the question without providing any additional information. • “What reasons? How are they the same? How are they different?” • While both Northerners and Southerners believed they fought against tyranny and oppression, Northerners focused on the oppression of slaves while Southerners defended their own right to self-government.
