  2. Natural Hazards • Ecosystems are constantly changing. • Natural hazard: a disturbance caused by nature • Landslides, wildfires, floods

Landslides • Landslide: a large movement of ground down a slope due to gravity • Can occur in any area with sloped land • Rain, flooding, earthquakes can start landslides • Clearing forests and construction can also make landslides more likely • Effects: • Destroy habitats • Block roads • Damage homes • Knock over power lines

Wildfire • Wildfire: a fire in a wild area • Natural events in many grasslands and forests • Many are sparked by lightning • Human actions can also cause wildfires • Effects: • Make more living space • Some trees need the heat from fire to release their seeds • Plants and animals can be killed • Can destroy habitats • Smoke and gases can cause air pollution • Can destroy people’s homes and other property

Floods • Flood: normally dry land becomes covered by water • Causes: • Heavy rainfall • Over-saturated soil that cannot hold more water • Higher than normal stream or lake levels • Caused by heavier than usual rains for a long time • Excess construction or urbanization • Creating too many roads, buildings, and parking lots that cannot absorb rain

Floods • Two common types of floods: • River floods: water slowly overflows its banks and covers the area near the river • Flash flood: a wall of water quickly sweeps over an area • Effects: • Plants and animals can be killed • Can destroy habitats or wash away resources • Human property can be destroyed • Brings new soil to an area • Nutrients help plants grow
