  2. Purpose of Unit To allow you to develop the skills needed to be a solo performer Scenario You are hoping to enrol on a music course at Reading college. Part of the application process is to provide a portfolio of performances. This portfolio must contain a programme for the pieces of music you will perform. First assignment You need to choose which instrument you would like to perform on. Then you need to choose four different styles of music. Then you need to choose a song from each of the four different styles you would like to learn to play. What you need to do Pass 1- Identify the four pieces of music Merit 1- Describe the four pieces of music Distinction 1- Justify why you have chosen the four pieces of music

Objective: To be able to choose appropriate performance pieces from different styles of music Task Choose 2 different styles of Music Research pieces of music for your chosen instruments from each style Select a piece of music from each style you would like to learn Identify these pieces of Music on your Cover sheet. Different styles Rock Pop Jazz Classical Musical theatre Folk Gospel etc. Tip: Make sure you choose a song that is of a suitable difficulty level for you!

Objective: To design a Programme with details of the pieces you have selected Task Using the research you did in the last lesson and then knowledge about programmes you have gained from the starter, design your own music programme for the performance you will give. Include the following information:- Front Cover – title, performers name, date & venue of concert (tbc!) Biography – summary of you Details of the pieces of music you have chosen Some background information about each piece of music/style of music Remember to make it look professional, colourful and attractive! Success Criteria: Pass 1: Design a programme which lists the two pieces of music chosen Success Criteria: Merit 1: Design a programme which describes each of the pieces you have chosen in detail.
  6. Objective: To understand about good rehearsal techniques Task In Pairs, discuss the following questions:- How do musicians make improvements to their work? What is the difference between Practicing and Rehearsing? Do the strategies you use for both differ? Watch the following video clips Design a flow diagram which will show a musician starting out, how they can effectively practice. (What tips did you pick up in the video?) Success Criteria: Merit 1: Design a flow diagram which describes each strategy. Objective: To be able to describe the pieces of Music for performance Task 1 Choose 2 different styles of Music Research pieces of music for your chosen instruments from each style Select a piece of music from each style you would like to learn Identify these pieces of Music on your Cover sheet. Success Criteria: Pass 1: Identify four pieces of music that you would like to perform Success Criteria: Merit 1: Describe the four pieces of music you have chosen to perform Tip: Make sure you mention all of the bullet points for the two pieces of music! Task 2 Describe each of the 2 pieces you have chosen for performance Make sure you mention: - When it was written Where is was written Why it was written The style of the piece What skills are needed to perform it Who is the target audience?
  8. Objective: To be able to justify your musical choices Task Add to your descriptions of all four pieces of music a justification of why you chose them. Make sure you include: - Whether it is appropriate for the target audience Can it be prepared in the time limit you have? Do you have access to the necessary instrument? Do have access to the necessary music/backing/ accompanist? Is it of a suitable difficulty level for you? Tip: Make sure you mention all of the bullet points for all four pieces of music! Success Criteria: Distinction 1: Justify your choices of music for performance
  9. Scenario You have selected your pieces of music so now you need to rehearse them. Reading college to wants to see how you have rehearsed your pieces, not just the final performance. Second assignment You need to keep a practice diary to show what techniques you have used to rehearse. You can submit DVD showing yourself using the techniques. You can evaluate the effectiveness of the practice techniques. What you need to do Pass 2- Identify examples of practice techniques Merit 2- Describe the practice techniques used in your rehearsals Distinction 2- Evaluate the techniques you have used
  10. Objective: To be able to research practice techniques on your instrument Task Research into your chosen instrument and identify practice techniques that performers use. Make sure you include practice techniques from the following sections: - Warm ups Scales Arpeggios Improve tone Breathing Concentration Posture Success Criteria: Pass 2: Identify examples of music practice techniques Tip: Make sure you mention every section from the bullet point list
  11. Objective: To be able to highlight a skill needed to perform each of your four chosen pieces Task Highlight a skill needed to perform each of your four chosen pieces well. Once you have found a skill describe how you will practice that skill using the practice techniques you have researched previously. Success Criteria: Pass 2: Identify examples of music practice techniques Tip: Make sure you relate your research about practice techniques to each of your chosen pieces.
  12. Objective: To be able to rehearse your pieces using the highlighted practice techniques Task Rehearse you pieces paying particular attention to the practice techniques you have highlighted. You must make sure you are video recorded practicing the highlighted technique for each piece You must fill in your practice diary at the end of each practice session for each piece. Success Criteria: Merit 2: Describe the practice techniques that are used in your performance Tip: Make sure you practice all four pieces and try to stick to the techniques you are being assessed on using.
  13. Objective: To be able to describe the practice techniques you have been using Task For each of your four pieces you must describe the practice techniques you have been using. You must make sure there is evidence of each of these techniques in both your practice diary and on video. Success Criteria: Merit 2: Describe the practice techniques that are used in your performance Tip: Make sure you practice all four pieces and try to stick to the techniques you are being assessed on using.
  14. Objective: To be able to evaluate the practice techniques you have used Task For each of your four pieces you must evaluate the effectiveness of the practice techniques you have been using. You should mention: - The positive effect the practice has had on your playing Any negative effects What you can do now that you couldn’t previously Any techniques you have picked up along the way What techniques you hope to develop further Success Criteria: Distinction 2: Evaluate the music practice techniques that are used to improve your performance Tip: Make sure you mention all of the bullet points for all four pieces of music!
  15. Scenario Now you have selected and rehearsed your pieces it is time to perform and record them for your finished portfolio. Final assignment You need to perform your pieces for an audience. We will do a practice concert in class and everyone will be recorded. There will then be a concert after school for everyone to show case their talent which will also be recorded. Since we have two recordings we will watch them all back and you will be allowed to choose the best one to submit. What you need to do Pass 3- Present a recorded portfolio of at least 4 contrasting pieces of music performed accurately to an audience showing some sense of style Merit 3- In addition to above, show some sense of musical communication to the audience Distinction 3- In addition to above, show expression and a clear sense of style.
  16. Objective: To be able to perform your pieces to the rest of the class Task You must perform your pieces to the best of your ability for the rest of the class. You will be recorded. Success Criteria: Pass 3: Perform your pieces with a sense of style Success Criteria: Merit 3: Perform your pieces with a sense of style and demonstrate musical communication to the audience Success Criteria: Distinction 3: Perform your pieces accurately, with expression, with a clear sense of style demonstrating musical communication with the audience
