  2. Island trees school district v. pico • The Island Trees School Board of Education acted in contrary to the recommendations of a committee of parents. The Board ordered that certain books be removed from its district’s middle and high school libraries. The Board stated that the books were, “Anti-Christian, Anti-American, Anti-Semitic, and just plain filthy.” The case got to the US Supreme court because after the federal district court favored the side of the Board. Then Pico went higher and brought the case to the U.S. Court of Appeals where the decision was reversed. Afterwards the Board petitioned to the US Supreme Court and was granted certiorari.

Island trees school district v. pico • The Constitutional Question was did the Board of Education’s decision to ban certain books from its junior high and high school libraries, based on their content, violate the First Amendment’s freedom of speech protections? The court voted in favor of Pico with 5 votes for Pico and 4 against. This case was important because it took away the students’ freedom of speech. Potential effects of this case may be that students in other schools may be having this freedom taken from them and not even know it. So this case can prevent this problem from happening in the future.

  4. Epperson v. Arkansas • This case involves the Arkansas legislature and a public school teacher named Mr. Epperson. The story behind this case is that the Arkansas legislature passed a law saying that public or state supported schools are not allowed to teach or use textbooks that teach human evolution. Epperson stated that it violated her First Amendment right to free speech.

  5. Epperson v. Arkansas • The question that went along with this case was; Does a law forbidding the teaching of evolution violate either the free speech rights of teachers or the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment? Epperson completely swept the votes with 9 in favor of and 0 against him. I believe this is an important case because Arkansas would’ve been limiting knowledge that students had every right to learn about. Some potential effects of this case would be that in the future states’ legislatures would think twice about making a law like this. I also believe this case will help give people the confidence to speak up and the knowledge to not assume that just because the government did it that it is right.
