Corporate sponsorship is necessary to achieve excellence through quality local programming. Recognition as a supporter of the Montreal Section of SAE is demonstrated by having your corporate logo in our newsletter and on our web site along with an e-mail or web link. Local students need corporate sponsorship to participate and succeed in SAE’s annual Collegiate Design Competitions and develop future technologies. Other sponsorship opportunities include announcement of job openings in our newsletter or on our web page. Approximately 250 of our student members graduate each year. Now is the time to recruit some of the brightest engineering minds by advertising through our organisation! Partners are required to ensure the complete success of our various programs. To demonstrate your support to the advancement of mobility engineering, contact one of the local chapter board members or visit our web site. - L.P. presents PACCAR'S TOUR Montreal Section of SAE P.O. 2. How can SAE Montreal bring more value to you, as a member? Question of the month! PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE The Montreal Section's governing board will begin its nomination and election process of 2001-2002 officers this month. A Nominating Committee will be formed to select nominees to the leadership positions of the governing board. The work of this committee is vital to the continued strength and success of the section. In light of this activity, I wish to invite a limited number of interested members in good standing to join the committee. If you wish to participate or have questions on the nomination and election process, please feel free to contact me at saloe@velanvalve.com before March 23. Next on SAE Montreal’s exciting program schedule is a visit of the PACCAR facilities in Boisbriand. This visit to the former Kenworth plant will be the last, and quite possibly the most popular plant tour of the season. Future activities will include the Bombardier presentation in April and the highly anticipated Motorsport banquet in June. Please visit our website for updates and a summary of recent activities. - S.A. PACCAR'S TOUR The sight of a huge bumper in your rearview mirror and the blast from an air horn lets you know that you are not alone on the highway. Pacific Car and Foundry entered the heavy-duty truck market in 1945 with the acquisition of Kenworth Motor Truck Company of Seattle and expanded its capabilities with the purchase Peterbilt Motors Company in 1958. Believing the company name no longer accurately reflected its products and activities, the name was changed in 1972 to PACCAR Inc. Today, PACCAR manufactures heavy-duty, Class 8 trucks sold around the world under the Kenworth, Peterbilt, DAF and Foden nameplates and also competes in the medium-duty market with Peterbilt and Kenworth models. Join the Montreal Section of SAE as it steps up into the cab for a tour of the PACCAR assembly plant in Boisbriand. PACCAR is located at 10 Sicard street; take highway 15 North, exit 640 East - Desjardins, first stop turn left, next stop turn right on Sicard. - R.B. OUR SECTION SPONSOR : OTIS Otis Elevator Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation (including Pratt & Whitney, Carrier, Sikorsky, Hamilton-Sundstrand, & International Fuel Cells), is the world’s largest company in the manufacture and service of elevators, escalators, moving walks and other horizontal transportation systems. Since 1853, when Elisha Graves Otis founded the company, Otis has been demonstrating it’s global presence. It’s installed base of more than 1.2 million elevators and escalators can be found in more than 200 countries and territories around the world. With sales of over $5.7 billion, Otis is the world’s leading manufacturer of elevators, escalators and other people-moving equipment. Otis’ expertise in engineering, electronics and information technology results in the highest quality equipment on the market. Otis has manufacturing facilities in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Australia and Japan. Engineering headquarters are located in Famington Connecticut with centers of excellence in Japan, France, Germany and Spain. Dedicated test towers are located in the US and Japan. Otis maintains world leadership by investing heavily in advanced elevator, electronic, and computer technology - in 1999 alone, Otis has invested more than $100 million for engineering and research and development. - L.P. PRESIDENT'S VISIT On Wednesday, February 7, the Montreal Section of the Society of Automotive Engineers hosted a visit from Dr. Rodica Baranescu, the SAE International 2000-2001 President, which focused on the local aerospace industry. A luncheon was held at Bombardier Aerospace’s headquarters, organized in collaboration with the Ministère de l’Industrie et du Commerce. The luncheon brought together engineering and quality leaders of local aerospace companies to partake in a meeting outlining SAE International and its Montreal Section’s aerospace initiatives. A short tour of our host’s assembly plant followed the luncheon. A banquet, sponsored by NewTech Brakes, in honor of Dr. Baranescu was held that same evening at École de technologie supérieure for the general SAE membership and guests. About 60 members and guests enjoyed the presentations made by Dr. Baranescu and Pierre Alègre. The former’s talk was on Bombardier Aerospace’s CRJ900, their 90-seat jet program. - R.B. AUTOGYROS PRESENTATION Michel Vallières, certified flight instructor and gyroplane pilot, explained the characteristics of these short takeoff and landing aircrafts on February 27 at École de technologie supérieure. His presentation covering the theory of flight, history of development, ease of operation and main design features, was followed by video tapes of three different planes. One of these planes, the Hawk 4 from Groen Brothers Aviation, is now being certified. This event was so successful that it was commented by some participants as being one the best technical presentation this year. - R.B. www.saesections.org/montreal/ Newsletter To receive the newsletter by e-mail or to reach us: saemontreal@mail.com
