  3. Transportation Infrastructure… • tourism industry cannot succeed without efficient way of getting tourists to their destinations • China has a well-developed system of transportation • most infrastructure based in the east (with pop’n) • travel in the west = dirt roads & major delays

  5. Getting Around… • most common types of transportation are trains and buses • 70 000 km railway track • sleeper cars can accommodate up to 60 people (30 bunk beds) • planning on adding 2000 km more rail lines • major cities like Beijing & Shanghai to receive “urban express” rail lines

  7. Getting Around… • China now has 1.33 million km of highway (about 200,000 km more than Canada!!) • for long journeys, “sleeper bus” cheaper option than plane or train (and you’re guaranteed a bed!) • Guangzhou to Shanghai is 20 hours by train!! • Guangzhou to Shanghai is 24 hours by bus!!

  8. Getting Around… • ‘sleeper buses’ are commonly used to travel between remote cities and villages where there are no existent train lines • notoriously crowded, uncomfortable, and can be dangerous • present the adventurous traveler with a highly cost effective alternative to flying.

Getting Around… • traditionally, Chinese travelled long distances by • boat (extensive canal system) • The Grand Canal • China’s legendary man-made waterway • runs from Beijing in the north to Hangzhou in • the south • stretches 1,747 kilometers • 24 locks & 60 bridges • 10 times the length of the Suez Canal • 20 times that of the Panama Canal • another wonder made by the ancient Chinese
