13. Parent Engagement/ Participación de los padres • Normally for the last 3 years we have had 1 large meeting for all grade levels. Unfortunately that is not a realistic format of having next year if we want full participation and want to help parents better. • This coming school year we will divide our meetings in two we will have the 9th and 10th grade parents together for our monthly parent academies. As for 11th and 12th grade parents they will be together for their parent academies. • Normalmente los últimos 3 años hemos tenido una reunión grande para todos los niveles. 14. Parent Engagement/ Participación de los padres • The reason behind this change is to better help parents. Parents who have students in 11th and 12th grade are approaching graduation so there is a strong need to talk about college admissions, and different topics as opposed to parents of 9th and 10th graders. Please be aware that the time and date for these meetings are still in discussion but it will continue to be on Saturday to better help accommodate parents. • La razón de este cambio es para mejor ayudar a los padres. 15. Bright Start • Although this is only for 10th grade parents I wanted to go ahead and introduce it. • Bright Start is a Family Literacy Program that we are piloting for the first time here in Simon Tech. It consists of a series of interactive workshops that focus on communication, literacy and effective parenting. Parents will receive training and learn strategies allowing them to support the school’s instructional programs which lead to increased student success both in school and in life. • There are 6 workshops each taking 2 hours over a span of 8 weeks and only 30 parents can participate. Unlike our monthly parent academies bright start is a weekly workshop which will be taking place every Saturday start Aug. 31- Oct. 19, 2013. Like we stated before this is a test drive and want to see if the program fits our parents so we want to see it work in a small group before introducing it any further. Bright Start is a very expensive program that has been shown to work in many schools and thanks to our Alliance President Judy Burton we will be able to offer it next school year. • Aunque esto es sólo para los padres del grado 10 quería seguir adelante e introducirlo. Bright Start es un programa de alfabetización para la familia que estaremos tratando por la primera vez aquí en SimonTech. Consiste en una serie de talleres interactivos que se centran en la comunicación, la alfabetización y la crianza efectiva. Los padres recibirán capacitación y aprenderán estrategias que permiten apoyar los programas de instrucción de la escuela que conducen al éxito creciente de estudiantes en la escuela y en la vida. 16. Campus Advisory Council/ Comité de Concejo Escolar • We introduced this council this school year, unfortunately the concept was still fairly new and it was work in progress so we did not have the chance to explain it to parents. This coming school year we are prepared to better run this type of council. The council is made up of students, parents, teachers and administrators. Parents and students play a huge role in this council because they will vote on rules and regulations that take place in school. These parents are the ones who will represent all families of Simon Tech. Their role will be to be in Town Hall Meetings (which I will explain on the next slide) and bring up any comments or concerns parents might have. • Introdujimos a este comité este año escolar, desafortunadamente el concepto seguía siendo bastante nuevo y era trabajo en progreso por lo mismo no tuvimos la oportunidad de explicarle de que se trataba este comité a los padres. 17. Town Hall Meeting/ Conferencia “Town Hall” • This is a new type of meeting we will be introducing next year. As a school we only function when we have both students and parents on board. So this meeting will allow parents to air their concerns about our campus. The parents who are part of campus advisory council will be leading this meeting and will be taking and addressing all concerns regarding the school. Anything that is up for discussion will be brought to the council meeting for it to be discussed. • Esto viene siendo un nuevo tipo de reunión que presentaremos el próximo año. Como una escuela funcionamos sólo cuando tenemos los estudiantes y padres a bordo. Así que este encuentro permitirá a los padres transmitir sus inquietudes acerca de nuestra escuela. 19. Award for Parent Engagement/ Premio de la participación de padres • Of the 26 Alliance schools there is an award given to 4 schools. This award is won by showing the most improvement in parent engagement at their campuses and by showing the different methods we have approached this concept. Simon Tech was one of those four schools chosen to receive the parent engagement award this year. This is a great feat and we hope to use the money that was won towards better helping parents. On May 16 all Alliance schools will have their last board member meeting of the year, during that meeting our school will be recognized in front of all Alliance schools for its performance. I would like to thank all families for their support and we hope to keep serving you better in the years to come. • De las 26 escuelas de la Alianza hay un premio otorgado a 4 escuelas. Este premio se gana mostrando un gran mejoramiento en la participación de los padres en sus escuelas y mostrando los diferentes métodos que nos han acercado a este concepto. SimonTech fue una de las cuatro escuelas elegidas para recibir el Premio de la participación de los padres este año. El ganar este premio es una gran prueba y esperamos invertir el dinero que fue ganado hacia los padres para ayudarles mejor. 21. Course Sequence/ Secuencia de cursos • Just a few key changes to next years courses. • Pocos cambios claves para los cursos del ano próximo. • Lets start with 9th grade: Spanish will be online, and there will no longer be a P.E class, the class will be replaced with a ELA class to better help students. • Iniciaremos con 9 grado: español estará en línea y ya no habrá una clase P.E, la clase será reemplazada con una clase ingles para mejor ayudar a los estudiantes. • Students who struggle in 9th grade Bio will not be moving on to Chemistry on their 10th grade year instead they will be taking Anatomy and Physiology. • Los estudiantes que tienen dificultades en 9 grado en la clase de Biología no tomaran química en su décimo año, en su lugar tomaran anatomía y fisiología • All students on their 3rd year or 11th grade year will be taking AP Bio. Part of our goal is for every student to at least take one college course on our campus before graduating. 25. CAHSEE • This year we introduced CAHSEE Bootcamp. This program started at the end of January, our own teachers came in on Saturdays to help 10th grade students on Math and English Language Arts(ELA) for 6 weeks. Due to their dedication to help your child pass our CAHSEE scores improved exponentially. Last school year we had 109 sophomores take the high school exit exam out of those 109 only 70 students passed both the ELA and Math exam that’s 64.2% passing rate. This school year 128 students took the exam out of those 105 student passed both the ELA and Math exams giving us a passing rate of 82%, that’s a 17% increase from last year. 95% of our student passed the Math portion and 82% passed the English portion. CAHSEE bootcamp will definitely continue next year for 10th graders and anyone who did not pass the exam this year, we hope to have your support in helping your students be successful. • Este año presentamos el CAHSEE Bootcamp. Este programa se inició a finales de enero, nuestros propios profesores vinieron los sábados para ayudar a los estudiantes del grado 10 en matemáticas y ingles(ELA) por 6 semanas. Debido a esa dedicación para ayudar a su estudiante a pasar ese examen, nuestras calificaciones de CAHSEE mejoraron exponencialmente. El año escolar pasado tuvimos 109 estudiantes de segundo año quienes tomaron el examen de egreso de la preparatoria. De los 109 sólo 70 estudiantes pasaron las dos porciones del examen el ingles y matemáticas, un porcentaje del 64.2%. Este año escolar 128 alumnos tomaron el examen de los cual 105 estudiantes pasaron las dos porciones del examen. Eso nos da un índice de aprobación del 82%, es decir un aumento del 17% respecto al año anterior. 95% de nuestros alumnos pasaron la parte de matemáticas y 82% pasa la parte en inglés. CAHSEE bootcamp definitivamente continuará el próximo año para estudiantes de 10 º grado y para aquellos estudiantes quienes no pasaron el examen este año, esperamos contar con su apoyo para ayudar a sus estudiantes a tener éxito.

26. Our First Senior Class/ Nuestraprimeraclase del doce • We have reached that time. Around this time next school year we will have our first graduating class, the class of 2014 will graduate from Simon Tech. We are very proud of all the accomplishments our students have achieved as well as our school accomplishments. For those who were not aware most of community was opposed to having this campus in the middle of Watts. Now we are the best public school in the area with the highest API scores in the community of Watts and every year we are improving. This year was no exception we introduced AP courses and more honor courses to our campus. We introduced CollegeSpring to prepare students to take the SAT exam the college entry exam. We introduced the afterschool program EduCare to help with tutoring afterschool and our teachers and staff have worked year round to prepare your students for college. Our seniors will be applying for college in September and we are proud to say they will definitely be ready for the university. • Hemos llegado a ese momento. Alrededor de este tiempo, el próximo año tendremos nuestra primera clase graduando, la clase de 2014 se graduará de SimonTech. Estamos muy orgullosos de todos los logros de que nuestros estudiantes han logrado igual de nuestros logros como una escuela. Para aquellos que no sabían la comunidad se opuso a tener esta escuela en el centro de Watts. Ahora somos la mejor escuela pública en la zona con las puntuaciones más altas de la comunidad de Watts y cada año estamos mejorando. Este año no fue la excepción hemos introducido cursos AP y más cursos a nuestro plantel de honor. Presentamos CollegeSpring para preparar a los estudiantes para tomar el examen SAT el examen de ingreso universitario. Hemos introducido el programa después de clases EduCare para ayudar con la tutoría después de clases y nuestros profesores y el personal ha trabajado durante todo el año para preparar a sus estudiantes para la Universidad. Nuestros estudiantes del doce aplicarán para universidades este septiembre y estamos orgullosos de decir que sin duda estarán listos para la Universidad.

27. Summer School/ Escuela de Verano • Last year no matter the class that was failed the student had the opportunity to make up the credit for it. We were able to actually offer this because we were using an online program called APEX. Unfortunately we did not get the results we wanted as students did not progress without constant instruction of the teacher. • This year summer school will be offered the old fashion way, with a teacher only teaching one subject over a span period of 2 weeks Monday-Friday from 7:30-2:30pm and space is limited so first come first serve. Classes that are in high need to the majority of students at Simon Tech will be offered. Courses that only a few students fail will not be offered and will need to be taken elsewhere. For example if 25 students failed Algebra 1 as compared to 8 students who failed English we will choose Algebra 1 over English and the English course will need to be taken elsewhere. • El año pasado no importaba la clase que se falló el estudiante tuvo la oportunidad de reponer el crédito. Se los hizo capaz ofrecer esto porque estábamos usando un programa en línea llamado APEX. Lamentablemente no conseguimos los resultados que hemos querido por lo que estudiantes no progresan sin instrucción constante del maestro. La escuela de verano de este año se ofrecerá de la moda antigua, con un maestro enseñando una asignatura durante un período de prueba de 2 semanas de lunes a viernes de 7:30am-2:30pm y el espacio es limitado así que el primero que se registre tendrá el cupo. Se ofrecerán clases que se necesitan mayormente para los estudiantes en SimonTech. Cursos que sólo algunos estudiantes no pasaron no se ofrecerán y tendrán que tomarse en otro lugar. Por ejemplo si 25 estudiantes fallaron Álgebra 1 en comparación con 8 estudiantes que no pasaron ingles, elegiremos Álgebra 1 sobre inglés y el curso de Inglés tendrá que tomarse en otros lugares.

28. Summer School/ Escuela de Verano • Our priority at this point will be the upper classmates meaning that because we are looking to make sure students can graduate at time they will be the first summer school applicants we will look at. 29. Summer School/ Escuela de Verano • Due to the short period summer school session runs there are certain rules parents and students need to know. If students are absent any day during those 2 weeks they will be dropped automatically, no exception. • Students who are not able to take courses at Simon Tech will be referred to other adult schools but be aware other schools will be having lotteries and might not have room during the summer. • You must know the reason behind schools offering limited spaces and classes is due to the number of educational cutbacks that have been made and unfortunately Summer School is something that schools pay out of pocket. Simon Tech students will need to pass classes the first time around because we are unable to offer them classes a 2nd or 3rd time. • Debido al período corto que la escuela de verano esta sesión hay ciertas reglas que los padres y los estudiantes necesitan saber. 33. ACE Fieldtrip • Permission slips were sent out for 10th grade students to attend a field trip next week, if you are interested in participating you are more than welcome to do so. We are offering a great way to complete all your hours for the year if you can attend the 3 day trip plus a training a day before. Parents who volunteer their time will receive 10 volunteer service hours.
