  2. Bubble Gum Bubble gum was made from mastic trees. It wasn’t until 1928 that Walter Diemer came up with the right gum recipe to make the very first bubble gum. Walter Diemer wasn’t the first person who wanted to invent bubble gum.

  3. Pink Bubble Gum • There was early attempts at making bubble gum in the 1800’s and early 1900’s. • However these bubble gums didn’t sell well because they were considered to wet and usually broke before a good bubble was formed. • He unwillingly created the first batch of bubble gum, he made it pink because that was the only shade of food coloring in hand.

  4. Chewing gum • By the 1920s, a handful of companies were making gum from Chicle a form of sapodilla tree sap. • That had been chewed in Belize, Guatemala and Mexico for centuries.

  5. Selling Bubble gum • Walter’s pink concoction had more stretch to it and was less sticky than earlier formulas. • Walter took a five pound batch to a Philadelphia grocery store and sold all of it in one afternoon. • Fleer co. took over the recipe and named it Double Bubble. • Selling the gum for a penny apiece. • Walter helped market Double Bubble by teaching salesmen to blow bubbles to determinate the product.

  6. Bazooka Bubble Gum • Double bubble had no competition until after World War II when Topps co. began wrapping bubble gum in comics and calling it Bazooka. • The brands became internationally and other companies later made bubble gum in sticks, flakes, nuggets, powder and paste.

  7. Bubble Gum attempts • Everyone tried to make bubble gum, but no one ever got it right. • During World War II, U.S. military personnel spread the popularity of chewing gum by trading it and giving it as a gift to people in Europe, Africa, Asia and around the world. • Walter Hardly chewed gum, but would invite children to his home and tell them about his invention. • Would have Bubble blowing contests.

  8. Chicle • As time went on, gums made from spruce became less popular. • Thomas Adams a photographer of New York tried his hand in the gum business. • Boiling down Chicle in his house and selling small chunks of it at a local drug store. • By 1871 Thomas Adams, he patented the popular a gum giving machine( known as gumball machine.)

  9. Walter • Walter oversaw construction of bubble gum plants in Philadelphia and Barcelona. • Walter traveled around the world marketing gum. • Walter Moved to Ocean City New Jersey. • Walters first wife died in 1991. • Walter got remarried in 1996. • Walter had five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

  10. Retiring and Death • Walter got hundreds of letters from children thanking him. • Walter became senior Vice president of Fleer. • Walter retired in1970. • Walter died at the age of 93.
