Understanding Soda Can Volume vs. Capacity: What Does the Label Mean?

This educational resource explores the essential question: Does the label on a soda can indicate the volume of liquid inside or the can's total capacity? It defines key terms like volume and capacity and introduces tools like graduated cylinders and syringes used for measurement. The conversation engages learners by inviting them to investigate whether soda companies provide accurate quantities in their cans, highlighting the discrepancy between labeled volume and actual contents. The information helps clarify consumer expectations and the science behind fluid measurement.

  1. Measurement Measuring Soda Can Capacity SMI3P3

  2. Essential Question • Does the label on a soda can tell the volume of a liquid in the can or the capacity of the can? SMI3P3

  3. Vocabulary Review • volume – the three-dimensional space occupied by something. For example, how much soda you have in a can. It might be full or half empty. • capacity – the volume of fluid (such as water) a container can hold when full. The container will be filled to the very top. SMI3P3

  4. Vocabulary • graduated cylinder – a transparent cylinder marked with evenly spaced lines for determining the volumes of liquids. • syringe– a cylinder and piston system used to draw up, measure, and transfer liquids. SMI3P3

  5. The soda can controversy • I recently opened a can of soda and noticed that it was not completely full. You may have noticed the same thing. I got to wondering if the soda company was really giving me my money’s worth. The label on the can says 355 ml, but does that refer to the capacity of the can, or the volume of soda in the can? • See if you can work together and come up with a plan to find out what the 355 ml refers to. 6. Discussing the results • Reporters share the results from your group. SMI3P3

  7. Vocabulary Review • Volume – the three-dimensional space occupied by something. Volume is any given amount. • Capacity – the volume of fluid (such as water) a container can hold when full. This is the amount a container holds when it is filled to the very top. SMI3P3

  8. Essential Question • Does the label on a soda can tell the volume of a liquid in the can or the capacity of the can? • The label on a soda can tells the volume of a liquid in the can. SMI3P3
