Do You Understand The Fire Alarm Regulations In The UK? As a business owner in the United Kingdom, you need to have an understanding of the UK fire alarm regulations. Fire alarms are part of The Regulator Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. All fire alarms and detection systems should be installed and maintained by the British Standards BS5839, recommended by the UK Government. To understand the fire alarm regulations in the UK, you probably have numerous questions, such as do I need a fire alarm. The current UK regulations require all business premises have the appropriate fire detection system. This means if a fire breaks out, it can be detected easily and occupants can be warned. This does not mean that every business premise needs a fire alarm system. You probably don't need a fire alarm system if you are a small single- storey or open plan premises, you do not store high-risk substances, you do not undertake high- risk activities, such as cooking and you don't have any vulnerable occupations, such as children disabled individuals and the elderly. If you cannot spot a fire in the premises from anywhere inside or if you should “fire” not all the occupants will hear you, then chances are you are going to need a fire alarm system. Doing a thorough fire risk assessment or using a professional company to provide you with an assessment will determine what fire detection system you need. The next thing to identify is what type of alarm do you need. There are three types of fire detection alarms you need to know about. There is the conventional fire alarm, which divides the premises into zones, in the event of an alert, the fire system identifies the zone. This is suitable for low risk and small environments. The addressable fire alarm is when each piece of advice has its electronic address. If one activates, the fire alarm panel will tell you exactly where the fire is. This is ideal for hospitals, schools, care homes and hotels. The wireless fire alarm uses a secure wireless link between the panel and sensors, working the same as the addressable system but without any wiring. This is ideal where you don't want cables, such as historical buildings and churches, for example. The UK fire alarm legislation does not specify what type of fire alarm you should you, it comes down to what is appropriate based on your premises. To meet the UK fire alarm regulations, you will need to get a reputable fire safety company to do a survey, design the system based on your needs and provide installation and maintenance. The fire alarm design must be to BS 5839 specifications. If not, your insurance may not cover you. The grades and categories of the systems are complex, the grades are how your fire alarm system should be constructed, while the categories cover the areas of your building. Fire alarm systems run through grades from A to F, A is the highest grade with F being the lowest grade. A residential building will be able to meet UK fire alarm regulations with a lower grade system, such as a D to F, these can use battery power and do not need to be wired to a central control panel. Businesses, on the other hand, will need a higher-level system to meet the regulations, which is usually
the A grade through to C grade.
