Understanding Diffusion and Osmosis: Key Concepts in Honors Biology
This lesson focuses on understanding crucial biology concepts including diffusion, osmosis, and cell transport mechanisms. Students will describe the process of diffusion, the osmosis of water in cells, and how cells manage the intake and expulsion of substances vital for life. Key notes highlight the role of cell walls in plant, bacteria, and fungi cells, the unique features of chloroplasts and mitochondria, and the differences between facilitated diffusion and active transport. Additionally, real-world applications are explored through film project items related to these concepts.

Character Education • We can always learn more and we normally will learn more Lesson 12 Honors Biology
Objectives • Describe diffusion • Describe the diffusion of water (osmosis) • Review how a cell brings in and expels necessary substances needed to carry on life Lesson 12 Honors Biology
Class Notes • Plant cells, bacteria, and fungi cells have cell walls • Chloroplasts and mitochondria have their own DNA for reproducing more copies of themselves • Diffusion takes place from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration in a fluid • As a result of diffusion concentrations on each side of a membrane eventually become balanced Lesson 12 Honors Biology
Class Notes continued • Facilitated diffusion is a type of diffusion that is sped up. Channels work in both directions and they concentrate molecules around them so normal diffusion is sped up. • Active transport requires energy an example is moving the potassium ion across the cell membrane • Plant cells in a hypotonic solution will cause the cells to take in water • Plant cells in a hypertonic solution will cause the cells to loose water (loss of turgor pressure) Lesson 12 Honors Biology
