Predictors of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: Impact of Self-Esteem and Family Distance

This study examines the real-world factors influencing non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among Year 9 participants. Findings reveal that 32% of NSSI behavior is significantly predicted by lower self-esteem and family distance, while 39% is driven by depression along with family distance, highlighting the substantial impact these variables have on adolescent mental health. The results emphasize the need for supportive family environments and mental health resources to address and mitigate risks associated with NSSI in adolescents.
