Listing and Designation • Provides temporary protection from demolition by requiring 60 days notice to Council for intent to demolish • No Council consent required for alterations, renovations • No financial incentives • No heritage property standards • Confers a legal protection status through a municipal bylaw under the Ontario Heritage Act thus requiring Council consent for alterations, demolition, etc. • Gives the option to access loans, grants, tax relief • Owner’s must adhere to minimum heritage property standards

Why list properties on the register? • Recognizes the cultural heritage value of properties in the community • Promotes knowledge and enhances understanding of the community’s cultural heritage • Creates a valuable resource that can be used in decision making for planning, development, and permit applications • Provides easily accessible information to planners, property owners, developers, tourists, educators, and the general public
