Distribution of Religions • Religion interests geographers because it is essential for understanding how humans occupy Earth. • People care deeply about their religion and draw from their core values and beliefs • Some are designed to appeal to people throughout the world and others for limited areas • Where are religions distributed?

  4. Distribution of Religions Universalizing Religion- attempts to be global and appeal to all people wherever they live in the world Ethnic Religion- appeals primarily to one group of people living in one place

  5. Universalizing Religions • Christianity- predominate religion in N. America, S. America, Europe and Australia • Islam- predominant religion of the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia • Buddhism- mainly China and Southeast Asia

  6. Ethnic Religions • Hinduism- India and Nepal • Other Ethnic Religions- Confucianism, Daoism, Shintoism, Animism, Judaism

Branches of Religion • Branch- a large and fundamental division within a religion • Denomination- a division of a branch that unites a number of local congregations in a single legal and administrative body • Sect- a small group that has broken away from an established denomination • Ex. Christianity Protestantism Baptist Seventh Day Baptist

  8. Religion and Diffusion • Religion is a particularly good example of the tension between globalization and local culture because • religion represents key/core cultural values and beliefs that may conflict with others.
