  1. Sixth Grade Parent Meeting February 27, 2006

  2. Looking Ahead • Friday, 3/3: Romeo and Juliet at the Chattanooga Theatre Center. Students will be billed approximately $7 for the trip. • Thursday, 3/9: Christopher Paul Curtis, author of The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963, will be in Chattanooga to speak and sign books at Bessie Smith Hall from 5:30 – 7:30. • Friday, 3/10: The third quarter ends. • Wednesday, 3/15: Field trip to Atlanta to visit the Carlos Museum at Emory University and ice skate at Kennesaw. Busses will depart at 7:15 AM and return by 4:15 PM. • Thursday, 3/16: Spring Break begins at 11:30

Expectations over time • Moving into the final quarter • Demands and expectations on students are increasing • Increasingly less time spent on organizational and logistical skills previously taught • Comprehension of new material dependant on previously learned concepts • Difficulty of curriculum increases • Speed of curriculum increases • Ultimate goal is prepare sixth grade students for seventh grade, and beyond

  4. ERB CTP IV

  5. What is the CTP IV? • A test designed to discriminate among students at the highest level. • The achievement tests help measure how well students are learning the curriculum. • The reasoning tests help measure a student’s skill base and higher order thinking ability.

  6. How are CTP IV results used? • The results can be used to evaluate student progress, including whether special attention, enrichment or different placement is warranted. • Test scores are broken into concept/skill areas that can be used to identify relative strengths and weaknesses. • The school as a whole can use results to evaluate how well the curriculum is working. • The CTP IV is administered in grades 6 – 8 at Baylor.

  7. Interpreting Score Sheets • Which tests are administered? • What is a norm group? • Which norm group comparison should you use? • What is a stanine? • What is a percentile?

  8. Things to keep in mind. • The CTP IV is just one piece of the puzzle – remember, when it comes to student learning, more information is better • Keep prospective - students are comparing themselves against the “best” • Understand what to expect – not every person is good at everything • Think carefully about sharing results with your child • Tests will be administered Monday and Tuesday, March 13 and 14.

  9. What Can You do to help your child prepare? Strike a balance between taking the tests seriously while not becoming anxious • Sleep! • Breakfast! • Exercise!
