788.11J Presentation“SensorWebs in the Wild” Presented by Jason Abele Original Paper: Sensor Webs in the Wild by Kevin A. Delin Sensor Webs – NASA JPL http://sensorwebs.jpl.nasa.gov/
The Main Idea • Monitoring with an Intelligent Fabric of sensors • Using ISM radios and hardened sensor “pods” • Postulates as a solution to complex routing • Monitor micro (~1m) to meso (~100m) climates • Can not be done with satellites to these resolutions
The Main Achievements • Achievements • Long Term Installations (Some Approaching 5 years) • Field Upgrades and Expansions • Contributions: • Importance of ease of deployment • Many Applications Require Physical Installs • Seismic and Subterranean Sensors • Careful Location Choice • Smaller is not a priori better • “Pod” Density metric better than “Pod” Numbers
The Challenges • Technical and Physical Obstacles • Extreme environment (Antarctic, desert flood basin) • Radio power and terrain obstacles from low lying “pods” • Adding new nodes to a running system • Complex routing to gateway nodes • Minimizing environmental impact • Power and installation problems if too miniaturized
Huntington Botanical Gardens - California http://caupanga.huntington.org/sensorweb/ Sensor Web Pods 13 (foreground) and 12 monitor conditions near male and female cycad plants. These pods have helped gardeners ensure similar conditions prevail for both plants. The mechanical packaging for Sensor Web Pods is just as important as the electrical design. Sensor Web Pod 15 is covered in mud from nearby watering and has had an antenna chewed on by some local fauna. Nevertheless, the pod has continued to operate well.
Antarctica Sensor Web pod 5. Notice the soil temperature sensors are a distance from the location of the pod. Tripod mounts were used where it was not possible to anchor bamboo stakes.
