EVANS Office: Hinckley 305 Phone: 496-1382 E-mail: evansk@byui.edu Office Hours: Mon.-Thurs. 9:30-10:00, Fri. 11:00-12:00 Course Description: This course is designed to give students an exposure to different lifestyle enhancement tools and techniques. The student will gain information that will enable them to teach individuals or groups lifestyle improving behaviors and techniques. Topics to be covered: We will cover the following topics (not necessarily in order listed) and others as time permits: Stress Management Fitness Assessment Smoking Cessation Back Care Weight Training Weight Control Ergonomics Nutrition Flexibility Blood Pressure Course Objectives: • Understand the ways people learn and which are most appropriate for certain • lifestyle behavior change • Develop competency in administering various lifestyle enhancing behaviors. • Develop a base of materials to enable the student to develop a portfolio of • lifestyle development tools. • Become competent in accessing the web to find current information on various • lifestyle enhancement sites. Lifestyle Change Contract: Each student will be required to sign a Lifestyle Change Contract. You will pick some aspect of your life that you would like to change and determine a course of action to accomplish the change in the course of the semester. You will turn in weekly reports of your progress throughout the course of the semester. Portfolio: Each student will be required to put together a portfolio of the different areas covered in the course of the Semester. This will be turned in for review at the end of the semester.

Teaching Experience: Students will pair up and be required to give a one hour presentation on some aspect of lifestyle enhancement (behavior change) This will occur during the later half of the Semester in class. I am trying to make arrangements with the Activities Program that will enable you to also teach the same seminar to students down in the Hart Building as part of the Wellness Center. Evaluation: 2 written exams @ 50 points each……………………………….………..100 pts Lifestyle Change Contract……………………………………….……..…140 pts Portfolio……………………………………………………………….…..100 pts Teaching Experience…………………………………………………….. 100 pts Class Participation………………………………………………………….60 pts TOTAL…………………………………………………………………….500 Pts Prerequisites: This is a 400 level course and should generally be taken during the Junior or Senior year. This course is required in the Health Promotion and Lifetime Wellness emphasis and is an option in Health Education Important things that aren’t listed anywhere else: • Although I will not take roll it is very important that attend regularly. If you • must miss a class please have the courtesy of letting me know before the class.
