  1. 1/22 • Identify and analyze the impacts of World War I on citizens and soldiers. • Bellringer: • Mini quiz: Take out a sheet of paper and write your name, date and period at the top.

WWI Mini-Quiz: No talking • List the Central Powers. • List the Allied Powers. • List 3 causes of WWI. • Whose assassination sparked the beginning of the war? • List 2 reasons that US joined the war. • Name one prominent American of WWI. • Draw a diagram of trench warfare with as much detail as possible.

  3. Wilson’s “14 Points” • Issued in Jan. 1918 • List of terms that Central Powers would have to meet to be able to end the war • Some of his points included: • Freedom of Seas • Free Trade • Large scale reduction of arms • No more secret treaties

  4. The war ends • 1917 – Russia surrenders (a separate peace) • Experiencing their own revolution at home • Bolshevik Revolution • Communist Takeover

  5. The War Ends • Armistice • An agreement to end fighting • (Germany requested it- surrendered to the Allies) • Nov. 11, 1918 • The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month… • Now known as Veteran’s Day!!

  6. Paris Peace Conference • Allied leaders met in Paris to determine the fate of Europe after the war • The “Big Three” • U.S. = President Woodrow Wilson • Great Britain= Prime Minister David Lloyd George • France= Georges Clemenceau • Central Powers not allowed to take place in negotiations

  7. Treaty of Versailles • June 1919 • Agreement made between Allied powers and new German government • Official end to the war, and punishment for Germany’s actions

Treaty of Versailles • Terms of the Treaty: • Forced Germany to take full blame for war • Germany must pay reparations • cover cost of war’s destruction and pension money for wounded Allied soldiers • Total= $30 billion ($2.7 trillion today) • Weakened Germany by limiting the size of its armed forces • The Germans were forced to sign the treaty, but this caused resentment and bad feelings for years to come…

  10. Psychological impact • “Never such innocence again” • First large scale war that involved countries all over the world • Soldiers experienced the horrors of a new type of warfare, were never the same

  11. Social Impact • Men lost limbs and were mutilated • Birthrate fell tremendously • Invalids unable to work • Ethnic hostility • Influenza epidemic • 20 million people died

  12. Economic Impact BEFORE • Across Europe homes, factories, roads, churches, etc were destroyed • Cost of war for each country: • GB= $55 billion • France= $45 billion • U.S.= $33 billion • Germany= $60 billion • A-H= $25 billion • Russia= $25 billion • TOTAL= approx $250 billion AFTER

  13. Death Toll of War Total Casualties = approximately 35-40 million** ** An estimated 6-13 million of these people were innocent civilians from both sides
