  1. Deconstructing the Express & Star (Front Page) By Adunola Wendy Ajuwon Linda Chiza Uwoama Uzoije Navneet Gogna

  2. Navneet - Regional News • Some of the Positive Points • supply local communities with news and information in a fast and efficient way •  they have a degree of loyalty from their readers • offer high value of classified adverts (McNair, B. (1999). (3rd edition) News and Journalism in the U.K.London Routledge)

  3. Regional News • Some of the negative points • snubbed because it is regarded as a low budget newspaper • called a second class newspaper • regional journalists are low paid and aspire to become journalists for the national newspapers. (McNair, B. (1999). (3rd edition) News and Journalism in the U.K.London Routledge)

  4. The Front Page • Made up of three main sections: •  Headline • Pictures •  Texts (Hodgson, F.W. (1989). (2nd edition). Modern Newspaper Practice. Heinemann Professional. London)

  5. Who will do what ? • Wendy is going to discuss the Headline and its functions • Uwoama is going to look at the pictures and explain what it adds to the front page, and what makes a good front page picture • Linda will discuss the text, and conclude for the group

  6. Wendy • What is a headline? • What are the characteristics of a good headline • Do these headline fulfil the criteria?

  7. What is a headline? • Headlines should tell the story. But, far more importantly, headlines should sell the story. (Sellers. L. (1975:73). Keeping up the style. Pitman Publishing New York)

  8. What are the characteristics of a good headline Headlines should be: • Vigorous and • Capable of being read aloud What they should not be is: • Idiomatic (Stilted) • Complicated • Move toward the use of anonymous phrases. (Sellers. L. (1975:73). Keeping up the style. Pitman Publishing. New York)

  9. Finally • ‘Headlines work in conjunction with other visual aspects of the newspaper text, in particular the pictures (Reah. D. (1998:23) ‘The Language in the Newspaper’. Routledge New York)

  10. Uwoama – Photographic Analysis • News is not just facts but representations produced in language and other signs like photographs (Bignell.J. (1997:81). Media Semiotics and Introduction. Manchester University Press. Manchester)

  11. Conclusion • The use of photography is part of the Express & Star’s newspaper ‘house’ style for its FrontPage. These three pictures go a long way in providing the newspaper visual balance which, I believe gives the newspaper a recognizable visual character, meaning that we as consumers can differentiate the Express and Star from other newspapers

  12. The texts on the R.H.S are about the progress of the war in Iraq: - Gas attack at the Royal logistic Corps US paratroopers’ seizure of Harir airfield to be used for landing their own fire arms. US pilot tornado pilot’s death A mother’s fear at the possibility of losing her two sons to war The texts on the L.H.S are informational news: - Stabbed man in Duncan Edwards Close Introduction of swipe cards for football Celebrity intention on participation at a trade fair in Wolverhampton (Coronation Street’s Mike Baldwin Linda – What the text says

  13. Why the Text? • Newspaper design and texts go hand in hand. Separate them, each languishes for want of the other.

  14. Possible message on Front page • Victory - US paratroopers’ seizure of the airfield • Remorse – The loss of tornado pilot, Kevin Main’s life • Mother’s concern for her two sons end up going to Iraq

  15. Conclusion Thank you for listening. Are there any questions?

  16. Bibliography • Bignell.J. (1997). Media Semiotics and Introduction. Manchester University Press. Manchester • Harris. G and Spark. D. (1997) Practical News Reporting. Journalism Media Manual. Oxford • Hodgson, F.W. (1989). (2nd edition). Modern Newspaper Practice. Heinemann Professional. London • McNair, B. (1999). (3rd edition) News and Journalism in the U.K.London Routledge • Reah. D.
