  3. Organizational Structure • Journal of Physical Chemistry A: • Dynamics, Clusters, Excited states • Kinetics, Spectroscopy • Atmospheric, Environmental and Green Chemistry • Molecular Structure, Quantum Chemistry, General Theory • Journal of Physical Chemistry B: • Macromolecules, Soft Matter • Surfactants, Membranes • Statistical Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Medium Effects • Biophysical Chemistry • Journal of Physical Chemistry C: • Nanoparticles and Nanostructures • Surfaces, Interfaces, Catalysis • Electron Transport, Optical and Electronic Devices, Hard Matter • Energy Conversion and Storage • Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters covers all topic areas included in Journal of Physical Chemistry A, B, and C.

  4. Day in the life of a Editor-in-Chief The EIC oversees the operation of the journal and is responsible for insuring that submitted papers are promptly and fairly evaluated All papers submitted to the journal are first examined by me or the Managing Editor to make a recommendation regarding its suitability for the journal I assign the selected papers to an Editor with expertise in the subject area I handle papers as the “assigned editor” (choosing reviewers and making decisions) I handle appeals, adjudicate ethical violation cases I organize Special Issues, and Feature Articles I choose editors, EAB members I organize EAB and editors meetings I make presentations at ACS meetings and other meetings about JPC I work with marketing folks I interact with ACS Publications, including quarterly meetings, and various committees, on publication policy issues, software issues, interface with the ACS, etc.

  5. What is the value-added of an editor? Len Interrante, Chemistry of Materials The EIC of an ACS journal typically has many years of experience as an active participant in the field of research and brings that experience into play each day in the evaluation of manuscripts and in piloting the course that the journal takes Ann-Christine Albertsson BIomacromolecules Joan S. Valentine, Accounts of Chemical Research Prashant Kamat, Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters

  6. How to choose where to publish research?

  7. How to choose where to publish research? • Which journal is likely to lead to the most readers of the paper? (This is a combination of the impact factor, the nature of the journal (society versus commercial), breadth of distribution, etc. • Is there urgency to the publication? Which journal is likely to give the fastest processing • Match with the mission of the journals (sometimes the journal specifies which papers they don’t want to see) • Issues of paper length (letters format versus regular paper) • Is this a review or feature article? Are there special features, such as videos, where a web-only format would be good. • Do we have a library subscription? • Do the coauthors of the paper agree on what should be done?
