A Wicked Couple • 1 Kings 16:29-30 -- Now Ahab the son of Omri became king over Israel in the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, and Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty-two years. Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord more than all who were before him.

  3. Ahab And Jezebel • 1 Kings 16:31-32 -- It came about...that he married Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and he went to serve Baal and worshiped him. So he erected an altar for Baal in the house of Baal which he built in Samaria. Ahab also made the Asherah....

  4. Name Meanings • Jezebel = Where is the prince? (concerned the annual death of Baal) • Ethbaal = Toward Baal • Ahab adds to Israel the sins of worshiping Baal and Asherah.

  5. What Was So Bad About Baal Worship? • Pagan nature worship • Baal – storm and rain god • An affront against God the Creator • Involved harlotry, temple prostitution • Sexual fertility cults to revive Baal when he died at the hands of Mot each summer. • Occasional human sacrifice

  6. Jezebel Killed The Lord’s Prophets • 1 Kings 18:4 -- …for when Jezebel destroyed the prophets of the Lord, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave...

  7. Jezebel Aided In Naboth’s Death • 1 Kings 21:7 • Naboth had a vineyard and Ahab wanted it for a vegetable garden. • Naboth wouldn’t sell. • Ahab pouted. • Jezebel conspired. • Naboth framed for blasphemy and killed. • Ahab got the vineyard.

  8. Showdown At Mt. Carmel • Elijah proclaims a drought on all Israel for three years. • 1 Kings 17:1 -- Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the Lord, the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, surely there shallbe neither dew nor rainthese years, except bymy word.”

  12. Prophecy Against Ahab • 2 Kings 9:7-10 -- You shall strike the house of Ahab your master, that I may avenge the blood of My servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord, at the hand of Jezebel….

Jehu Kills Jehoram • 2 Kings 9:22-24 -- When Joram saw Jehu, he said, “Is it peace, Jehu?” And he answered, “What peace, so long as the harlotries of your mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?” So Joram reined about and fled and said to Ahaziah, “There is treachery, O Ahaziah!” And Jehu drew his bow with his full strength and shot Joram between his arms; and the arrow went through his heart and he sank in his chariot.

  17. Jehu Kills Ahaziah (King of Judah) • 2 Kings 22:27 -- When Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden house. And Jehu pursued him and said, “Shoot him too, in the chariot.” So they shot him at the ascent of Gur, which is at Ibleam. But he fled to Megiddo and died there.

  18. Jezebel Dies – 2 Kings 9:32ff • Thrown out window by servants. • Trampled by horses • “They went to bury her, but they found nothing more of her than the skull and the feet and the palms of her hands….” • Eaten by dogs and became “…as dung on the face of the field….”

  19. Message For Today • 1 Corinthians 10:14 – “Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.” • Modern idolatry? • Anything that causes us to turn away from Almighty God

  20. Colossians 3:5 • Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.”
