  2. Introduction • The information you are receiving today is important to you as a student. In order for HHMS to provide you with the best possible education, you must take the responsibility of choosing subjects that will help you achieve your goals. You will receive an information booklet needed for scheduling. It will provide you with graduation requirements, scheduling requirements, course summaries and other important information. Read this guide carefully and discuss your schedule with your parents. You are not allowed to change teachers or course subjects once the schedules are issued, so you should give serious consideration to your selections.

  3. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS(for incoming freshmen beginning 2008-09) • The Louisiana Department of Education has two basic curricula for the freshmen class of 2008-09 and beyond. They are the LA Core 4 and the Basic Core. Every student is automatically enrolled in the LA Core 4 Curriculum unless the parent/guardian and the student choose to opt out at the end of the 10th grade year. In order to opt out, a conference must be held with the student’s counselor to discuss the options and a contract must be signed. • If the student, parent/guardian, and counselor decide it is in the best interest of the student to opt out of the LA Core 4, the student will then enter the Basic Core or Career Diploma track and must choose a career pathway.

  5. 4 Units of Math Algebra I Algebra I, Part I Algebra I, Part II Geometry Algebra II Remaining unit shall come from the following: Math Essentials, Financial Math, Advanced Math Pre-Calculus, Advances Math Functions and Statistics, Calculus

  6. 4 Units of Science Biology I Chemistry I 2 units from the following: Physical Science, Physics I, Biology II, Environmental Science, Agriscience II A student completing a Career and Technical Area of Concentration may substitute a BESE/Board of Regents approved IBC-related course from within the student’s Area of Concentration for the 4th required science unit.

  7. 4 Units of Social Studies Civics American History World Geography World History Psychology A student completing a Career/Technical Area of Concentration may substitute a BESE/Board of Regents approved IBC-related course from within the student’s Area of Concentration for the 4th required social studies unit.

  8. ½ Unit of Health • 1 ½ Units of PE or JROTC

  9. 1 Unit of Art Fine Arts Survey of 1 unit of Art, Band, Choir or Theatre • 2 Units Foreign Language 2 Units of the same foreign language or 2 units of speech (must have foreign language for TOPS). • 3 units of electives • Total 24 units

  11. 3 Units of Science Biology 1 unit from the physical science cluster: Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics 1 unit from Biology II, Environmental Science, Agriscience II, Anatomy and Physiology, or an additional course from the physical science cluster

  14. HAMMOND HIGH MAGNET PROGRAMS • Beginning with the 2011-12 school year, Hammond High has been designated the Medical Magnet school in the parish. HHMS will be offering programs in medical fields and other areas of concentration. These Career Clusters and Career Pathways have specific guidelines and course selections.

  19. GEE The Graduation Exit Exam is required for graduation. Students must pass the English and Math sections, and either the Social studies or Science sections. If you fail one of these test, you may be placed in remediation classes.

  20. EOC Testing • The state department is phasing in End of Course Testing. This year students are testing in Algebra I, English II, Geometry, and Biology. English III and American History will be added in the future. • 15% of the students final grade will come from the EOC score. • 2010-11 freshmen follow the EOC requirements for graduation instead of GEE.

Testing Information • 9th grade EOC testing • 10th grade PLAN GEE in English and Math EOC testing • 11th grade PSAT- on a voluntary basis GEE in Science and Social Studies ACT – Recommended in April for college bound SAT – if required for college entrance • 12th grade Repeat ACT and SAT as needed

  22. Grade ClassificationBased on the following: 9th – 0 to 5.5 credits 10th – 6.0 to 10.5 credits 11th – 11 to 16.5 credits 12th – 17 credits

  23. Individual Graduation Plan According to the Career Options Law, every student must have an individual graduation plan on file. These are to be turned in with the schedule request forms. Parent signatures are required. The plan is initiated in the 8th grade and will be updated each year. Individual graduation plans will be made using LAePortal. (www.LAePortal.com) Students are to select an area of concentration to use as a focus for their high school curriculum. Students are to select 4 courses in the area of concentration and 2 related courses. Students may revise plans as needed.

  24. Diploma Endorsements Students have the opportunity to earn diploma endorsements. At the present, there are two endorsements available: Career/Technical Endorsement Academic Endorsement

  25. Dual Enrollment Students who qualify may enroll at SLU or Louisiana Technical College and attend classes while attending HHMS. See your counselor if interested.

Board of Regents The Board of Regents requires that students take the Board of Regents Core Curriculum (Core 4) in order to be considered for admission to a four year public college or university in the state of Louisiana. The student must also meet the GPA, ACT, and any additional requirements for the particular college or university that the student plans on attending. TOPS has additional requirements.

TOPS The Louisiana Tuition Opportunity Program for Students is a scholarship program that will pay for 8 semesters of average college tuition at any in-state public college for qualifying students. The College Prep award will pay for tuition only at a qualifying state college. The Tech award will pay for qualifying technical school tuition.

  29. TOPS REQUIREMENTS • Core Curriculum 17.5 credits for the College Prep or Tech Awards • 2.5 Cumulative GPA in TOPS Core Curriculum • Score a Minimum of 20 (current state average) on the ACT for College Prep or 17 for Tech Award

  30. TOPS COLLEGE PREP CORE CURRICULUM • 4 English Credits – English I, II, III, and IV • 3 Math Credits – Algebra I, II and Geometry • 3 Social Studies Credits – Must include Civics/Free Enterprise, or Civics (year) and American History • 3 Science Credits – Must include Biology and Chemistry

TOPS College Prep Core Continued… • 2 Credits of the same Foreign Language • 1 Credit of Fine Arts Survey* • ½ Credit of Computer Education • One additional unit must be selected from the advanced science or advanced math core subjects. At HHMS we offer Adv. Math, Calculus, Biology II, Physics

  32. *Core Substitutions • 2 Art units, or a combination of any 2 units of Band, Choir, Piano, or Performing Arts. • 1 extra elective from among the core which is not being used to satisfy the core requirements.

TOPS TECH AWARD • ACT of 17 • Business English • Financial Math Option 1 • Fine Arts or a Vocational Course in Agriscience, Business, Marketing, Technology, or Family and Consumer Science • 2 Foreign Language credits or Speech I & II, and/or Technical Writing • ½ Computer Science or Computer Applications

  34. TOPS TECH AWARD Option II • 4 Career major courses in a vocational area • 1 Related or technical field course • 1 Basic Computer course

CHANGES TO TOPS CORE CURRICULUM for GRADUATES of 2014 and THEREAFTER • 4 English • 4 Math • 4 Science • 4 Social Studies • 1 Fine Arts Survey; (or 2 units performance courses, art, or 1 elective from the core curriculum) • 2 Foreign Language • Currently the GPA is 2.5 in the core and ACT composite of 20.

  36. Trailblazers Camp • The Trailblazer Program is a unique approach to training high school students about the availability of financial aid as a means of access to postsecondary education. The program includes a comprehensive three-day training workshop, presented on a college campus by LOSFA personnel and other financial aid professionals for the purpose of educating selected high school juniors about the college admissions process and how to obtain financial assistance for college.

  37. One student is nominated by each public and non-public high school in the state. Under the direct supervision of the high school guidance counselor, each Trailblazer is expected to use every opportunity to share knowledge of financial aid procedures with peers throughout their senior year of high school. Each Trailblazer is given a manual outlining all aspects of the federal and state financial aid programs available. • This summer’s Trailblazer ‘s Camp will be Sunday, July 17-Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Nicholls State University, Thibodaux, LA.

  38. About Scheduling • We encourage students and parents/guardians to agree upon course selections. Parents’ signatures are required and the scheduling form should be returned within the deadline. • If a student does not turn a schedule request in on time, the counselors will make one for them. • Once the master schedule is made based upon students’ requests, it is extremely hard to make changes.

  39. Schedule Request Form Forms are due to your English teacher by four days from the day we conference with you in the library. A completed and signed Individual graduation plan (5 yr plan) must be attached and any or all special permission forms or applications for specific options must accompany your schedule request. (For example, the application for the Honors program would need to be completed and attached to your schedule request.)

  40. CRITERIA FOR ADMISSIONS INTO HONORS COURSES Students must meet three of the four criteria yearly for the subject area: • Minimum overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.80 • Minimum subject area average of 3.00 • Teacher Recommendation based on a subject-area checklist. • Score Mastery or Advanced on LEAP or EOC test in subject area. Note: An application must be completed and attached to schedule request form.

  41. Scheduling Brochure • The scheduling brochure has information on course selection and guidelines. Please read it carefully. All the courses offered here are listed with a brief description. Pay attention to any prerequisites. Remember, be careful in your selections. • All the new magnet programs that HHMS will have to offer and the guidelines for each will be found in the brochure.

Course Selection • Please be sure to read the description of the elective before choosing. • Please choose wisely, because we do not change electives once the master schedule is made. • If you ask for a class and receive it, you will be expected to stay there for the entire length of the course.
