  3. The Transcribed Epic • Transcribed around 1000 A.D. • Written down by Christian monks • Only monks were literate at this point in history.

The Medieval Church • Was a central authority in a way that many governments were not • Controlled warfare by controlling knights and performing all knighthood ceremonies • Control of knights was at its highest around 1000 A.D. • Church tried to regulate the instruction of Christian knights and warriors

  5. The Medieval Church • Make knights spiritual so they leave land to the church • Increase the wealth and power of the church • Stress faith in God, especially the Old Testament belief that God physically aids those who fight for him.

  6. The Peace of God • Proclamation preventing unarmed peasants and clergy from being attacked • Excommunication the punishment for attacking or robbing a church, stealing farm animals from the poor, and robbing or attacking an unarmed clergyman.

  7. The Truce of God • Focused on preventing violence among Christians, especially knights. • Fighting limited to about 60 days of the year. • Fighting not allowed on Sundays, Fridays, Holy Days, and all during Lent.

  8. Christian and Non-Christian Relations • First Crusade launched in 1095 • Tensions building long before that • Practically, the killing of non Christians was encouraged • Church’s message: Kill all those who do not follow Christ
