This week’s discussions center around the Middle Ages, examining our disagreements about its positive and negative aspects. We explore how different perspectives (POVs) shape our understanding of historical events and the implications these have for the narrative of history. Additionally, we identify the "winners" and "losers" at the end of this period, examining documents like Unam Sanctum through SOAPS to assess biases and the nature of secular versus papal relations. Finally, we will highlight five major themes and important vocabulary terms that represent key concepts from this era.

Example EX: Catholic Pope, Boniface VIII, created the papal bull UNAM SANCTUM in 1302. This document was designed to reestablish papal authority over secular powers and illustrate to the French King Philip the Fair that monarchs were not permitted to tax or remit taxation without consent of the Holy See. This document’s failure is often considered the beginning of a significant decrease in papal power and a landmark in the formation of strong, centralized monarchial forms of government in Western Europe.
