Theoretical Framework Holistic approach - Work in all facets of a child’s life - All members of their family and system Strengths based - Instills hope for the child - Allows the social worker to work in a more positive way with what every one else sees as an “unsolvable problem” Specialised Behaviour Management Program

  8. Target Group of SBM program? Beneficiaries: Ten adolescence age 13 to 18 years (exceptions made) Admission Criteria: Adolescents with a diagnosis/ display behaviours associated with CONDUCT DISORDER or OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANT DISORDER. Exclusionary Criteria: Drug use and school drop out not exclusionary criteria Parent / Guardian participation essential Service area: Community and CYCC’s inWynberg & Athlone districts Specialised Behaviour Management Program

Successes Pilot successful and subsidy renewed In second half of year Numerous referrals with a waiting list 7 of 10 successfully placed back into school or stayed in school after treat of expulsion 2 previously found at risk prevented from entering alternative care Specialised Behaviour Management Program

Challenges High drop out rate due to: - Lack of commitment from external agencies & CYCC’s - 3 children absconded from CYCC (beyond service area) Contracts signed by referring professional – clearly stating obligations 2 referrals denied - child/parent being hearing impaired Social worker to do sign language course Specialised Behaviour Management Program

  12. Challenges Multiple referrals from CYCCs- transfer of knowledge to different cases Work with system instead of one client so that learnings are transferable Time constraints – Manpower Leliebloem CYCC’s to assist Specialised Behaviour Management Program

  13. What makes it work? THE PROGRAM: Constantly evolving to meet needs of beneficiaries Each child assessed and intervention tailored to their specific needs Holistic support – child, family/guardian, school Partnership with ADP – camp and group work Specialised Behaviour Management Program

SKILLS OF THE WORKER: Strengths based approach Patience and endurance- to work in the space where everyone else has given up Rapport building skills Ability to ”work with a clean slate” No blame while getting child and family to accept responsibly (Change patterns) Ability to work with child and parents Specialised Behaviour Management Program
