Newly Discovered Animals Benthic comb jellyThis new species (Abyssobenthic ctenophore) of comb jelly, found at a staggering depth of 7,217 meters within the Ryukyu trench off the coast of Japan, is the deepest living known ctenophore. Before its discovery, most scientists didn't believe it was possible for any similar life form to exist at that depth.

  7. NeocyemaFound in the depths between 2,000 and 2,500 meters, this bizarre, elongated orange animal has been identified as a neocyema, one of only five specimens ever caught. It is the only one found along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
