  2. What is a Result ? A describable or measurable change resulting from a cause and effect relationship - UNDG agreed RBM terminology

  3. Strategic Plan Outcomes: Definition & key features The HIGH LEVEL RESULTS of UNCT action • Changes in institutional performance or behaviours • Strategic contribution to Government priorities • Focus on key priorities… No of outcomes depends on: • Challenges • UNCT comparative advantages • Alignment/ support of key stakeholders • Reflect a choice about strategy or policy  Debatable & controversial.

  4. Typical pitfalls • Wordy (..and no change language) To promote equitable economic development and democratic governance in accordance with international norms by strengthening national capacities at all levels and empowering citizens and increasing their participation in decision-making processes • Too ambitious Strengthened rule of law, equal access to justice and the promotion of rights • Containing multiple results The state improves its delivery of services and its protection of rights—with the involvement of civil society and in compliance with its international commitments

  5. Typical pitfalls • Wishy-washy, not a result (ie. Support provided to improve..) Support to institutional capacity building for improved governance • So general, they could mean anything To promote sustainable development and increase capacity at municipal level • Overlapping with National goals/ MDGs (impacts) Substantially reduce the level of poverty and income inequality in accordance with the MDGs and PRSP • Confusing means and ends Strengthen the protection of natural resources through the creation of an enabling environment that promotes sound resources management

  6. Good examples • Niger Delta/ governance/ conflict prevention and management Plan Outcome: In 3 Niger Delta States, development plans reflect the priorities of communities Agency Outcome: A participatory development planning and monitoring process is operational in 3 Niger Delta States • HIV/AIDS Plan Outcome: By 2010 there is a 30% reduction in MTCT in 6 focal states Agency Outcome: 80% of ANC clinics in the 6 focal states provide high quality PMTCT services

  7. Good examples • Polio eradication Plan Outcome: All children U5 are immunized against polio by 2013 Agency Outcome: All PHC facilities in the northern zone provide routine immunization services Agency Outcome: Families in the non-compliant communities in the northern zone are aware of the importance and benefits of polio immunization
