Summary of myth The Romans revered Janus for his strength and loyalty. He saw an army trying to kidnap Roman women he got so angry that he made a volcanic hot spring erupt, burying the attackers and saving the women. In gratitude for this and for many ways he looked after them, the Romans carved Janus’s likeness on the top of nearly every city gate, allowing him to watch over every citizen’s Inside and to keep a sharp look out for approaching enemies
