  1. ReStream -Remmen - Video over IP • Usability test results Andreas Bergstrøm, Harald K. Jansson, Magnus Fredlund

  2. Purpose Why? • To test the general usability of the GUI • To test for things not easily understood • To look for errors • To gain general feedback on the system

  3. The prototype

  4. Method How? - The tasks • Participants: Computer science personnel • Tasks: • The user described how he/she perceived the system • The user started a stream • The user stopped a stream • The user changed stream information • The user described his/her general opinion on the system, and what was good or bad

  5. Method How? - The procedure • The user was given a brief introduction to the system • No training was given to the user • The tasks were performed • Data was collected by observing the user and noting problems which occured.

  6. Results What? - A general overview • General perception: All user perceived the correct usage of the system without training • Usage: 99 per cent of all tasks were performed quickly and correctly • The system at large would seem to be rather userfriendly

  7. Results What? - The problems • The color-scheme was perceived by many of the users as ugly and unfitting • The lack of a back link from the options screen was extremely frustrating - not usable • The system was perceived to be very slow • The lack of green color to indicate stream process running was confusing to some users • The use of red color on the status indicator when then stream was off, indicated a critical error to many users.

  8. Results What? - The problems - part II • Options pane: • The phrasing “Toggle On/Off” was confusing to most users • The phrasing “Coverage-mode” was confusing to most users • The two system bugs caused some confusion • The system was unsure wheter a stream was on or off • Instead of Local, National and Global, and number was displayed.

  9. Discussion How to improve the system? • The color-scheme is clearly in need of redesign (Done) • The layout of the option page will need to be redesigned • Addition of back-link • Better placement on page • Better wording of some options • Placement of option page • Separate page - centered? • On main overview page instead of status information

  10. Immediate improvements

  11. Discussion How to improve the system? • The usage of color to enhance usability of stream status information needs rethinking • Problem - streamer running does not mean AOK • The system now know whether a stream is on or off • The system needs to be speeded up or process indicator added • Fixed - Slow back-end replaced by fast back-end

  12. Questions?

  13. The end
