  2. OBJECTIVES • TO LEARN TERMINOLOGY RELATED TO MICROBIOLOGY

  3. MICROBIOLOGY • The study of organisms that can be seen only through a microscope including, bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites, and rickettsia

  4. MICROORGANISM • Organisms that can be seen only with the aid of a microscope

  5. BACTERIOLOGY • The study of bacteria

  6. BACTERIUM / BACTERIA • Microscopic, unicellular plantlike organisms belonging to the Protista kingdom

  7. AEROBE • Microorganisms that live and grow in the presence of oxygen

  8. ANAEROBE • Microorganisms that live and grow in the absence of oxygen

  9. BACTERIOSTATIC • Arresting or stopping the growth or multiplication of bacteria; an agent that also stops bacterial growth

  10. COCCUS • Spherical bacterium

  11. CONTAGIOUS • Capable of being transmitted from one individual to another

  12. DORMANT • Inactive, quiescent

  13. DROPLET INFECTION • Infection due to the inhaling of respiratory pathogens suspended on liquid particles exhaled by someone who is already infected

  14. EPIDEMIC • Pertaining to the outbreak of a disease or diseases that occur in unusually high occurrences during certain times and places

  15. PANDEMIC • Worldwide epidemic

  16. EPIDEMIOLOGY • Study of factors surrounding spread, frequency, and distribution of diseases, injury, and other health-related events

  17. HOST • Plant or animal that harbors and provides sustenance for another organism

  18. IMMUNITY • Condition brought about by the immune system to give protection from an infectious agent

  19. INCUBATION PERIOD • Time required for development, as in symptoms of disease after infection

  20. INFECTION • Invasion and multiplication of microorganisms in body tissues

  21. LATENT • Dormant, an inactive period

  22. PATHOGEN • Adisease causing microorganisms

  23. SEPTICEMIA • Presence of pathogenic microorganisms in the blood

  24. SPORE • A specialized protective covering which some bacteria form when environmental factors are not good for their development

  25. GRAM STAIN • Standardized procedure for staining bacteria according to their ability to accept and retain dyes based on certain characteristics in the composition of their cell walls

  26. BACTEREMIA • The presence of bacteria in the blood

  27. MYCOLOGY • The study of fungi and fungoid diseases

  28. MYCOSIS • Any disease caused by a fungus

  29. MUTATE • To change the genetic material, which can eventually lead to a change in the characteristics of an organism

  30. NORMAL FLORA • Specific microorganisms that live in a specific area of a host without causing disease

  31. IMMUNIZATION • Process of making one immune or protected from a disease by injecting a vaccine
