Cause: What happened first? A cause is what makes something happen- It happens first. Example: It rained a lot this spring.
Effect What happened as a result of the rain? Flowers will grow. The cause (rain), made the flowers grow (effect).
More Examples of Cause and Effect • The girl studied hard for her spelling test as a consequence, she earned an A+ on her test! The causeis the girl studied for the spelling test. (The cause happens first.) The effectfrom the cause is the girl earned an A+ on her test. (The effect happens second as a result of the cause.)
After reading “Alexander and the Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” write the answers to the following questions in complete sentences. Use details from the story.
-He went to bed with gum in his hair.-Dropped his sweater in the sink while water was running.-His mother forgot his dessert. These are some of the causes that made Alexander have a bad day.
