What makes someone a good friend? • A friend is someone who accepts you just the way you are, believes in you and encourages you • Someone who is trustworthy, who never forsakes you, who forgives your mistakes, who enjoys being with you, and who makes you laugh • Did you know that Jesus wants to be our Best Friend? • John 15:15 ‘I do no call you servants anymore, because a servant does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father.’

  3. Jesus gave us good examples of how friendships works. • He was never too busy to help those in need (Mark 5:1-20) • Jesus was too proud to speak to the woman at the well (John 4:7) • Jesus was a friend to Mary, Martha and Lazarus (John 11:11) • He can help us with our problems (Jeremiah 33:3, Matthew 11:28-29

  4. Jesus as our Friend Today • He wants His friends to have a meaningful life • He knows our weakness and the good in us • He is not a friend who encourage us to remain in our weaknesses, or to become stunted (little) in our growth • Hebrews 5:12 • He calls us to a high standard of living that would reach higher each day • He sees the potential in us and wants us to be successful in living the Christian life

  5. Jesus as our Friend Today • Romans 12:2 • Ephesians 3:16-20 • James 4:4 CES “you people aren’t faithful to God! Don’t you know t if you love the world, you are God’s enemies? And if you decide to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.”

Jesus as our Friend Today • A true friend will share what he has (Luke 4:18) • Jesus came to a sin sick world (Romans 3:24) • Let us be careful to maintain that friendship with Him • We praise Jesus, worship Him and serve Him, but friendship is what Jesus wants most of all. • Jesus wants to be this way with us. He is not a far away God. He wants us to spend time with Him. He wants to be your very best friend, and He wants you to be His! • Jesus is the best of everything we look for in a friend.

The Lord looks at the Heart (1Samuel16:6-12) • Proverbs 17:16 • (BBE) How will money in the hand of the foolish get him wisdom, seeing that he has no sense? • (CEV) Why should fools have money for an education when they refuse to learn? • (ESV) Why should a fool have money in his hand to buy wisdom when he has no sense? • (GW) Why should a fool have money in his hand to buy wisdom when he doesn’t have a mind to grasp anything?

  8. James 1:5-8 “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

  9. These things and so many more that document the words and deeds of the man, named David, begin with these words: “…the Lord looks at the heart…” • It will be said of him that he was – according to God - “a man after God’s own heart”
