  3. Definition of Special Educational Needs • Have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age • Have a disability which prevents or impedes a child from making use of educational facilities provided for children of the same age in school

  4. Four Main Categories • Communication and interaction • Cognition and learning • Behaviour, emotional and social development • Sensory and/or physical

  5. Children on the SEN register may have difficulties with: • reading, writing, number work or understanding information • expressing themselves or understanding what is being said to them • organising themselves • understanding and following rules and routines • making friends or relating to adults • a medical condition • a sensory need such as a difficulty with seeing or hearing

  7. Stages • School Action – SA • School Action Plus – SA+ • Statement of Special Educational Needs

  8. School Action • When a student is identified as making little or no progress despite a differentiated approach • To then look at interventions that are additional and different from those provided as part of the schools differentiated curriculum and strategies

  9. School Action Plus • Despite receiving individual programmes and/or support the student continues to make little progress • SA+ is where we seek help from external agencies and support services

  10. Statement of Educational Needs • Can take place when despite the help given by schools a student is still not making adequate progress • Will have hours attached to his/her statement to ensure support is available
